‘Journalist’s remains’ examined (update Tuesday)

Featured Replies

The investigation into the death of Canadian journalist and author Dave Walker continued over the weekend, with remains believed to be his taken to a Siem Reap hospital for closer examination, provincial immigration police chief Chao Mao Vireak said yesterday.

“The official of the Canadian Embassy from Bangkok and [Walker’s family’s] lawyer are cooperating with Cambodian police,” Mao Vireak said. “We don’t [yet] have any clue [as to the cause] of his death.”

Walker went missing on February 14. His remains were found on Wednesday evening by two boys near Angkor Thom.

In an interview on Canadian television, journalist Peter Vronsky, a friend of Walker, maintained that Walker had a relationship with Canada’s intelligence agency, advising them on the possibility of Khmer Rouge war criminals entering Canada along with refugees in the 1980s. He went on to say that a returned refugee suspected of involvement in Walker’s disappearance was a “senior Cambodian police officer”.

Forensics exam wraps
Tue, 6 May 2014

Police in Siem Reap said yesterday that the examination of remains believed to be of Canadian journalist and author Dave Walker is complete, but that definitive test results wouldn’t be available for several weeks.

“The body of a foreign victim was already examined by a specialist doctor who was sent from Thailand, but the results of the examination of the body were not released yet,” Chao Mao Vireak, chief of Siem Reap Provincial Immigration Police, said.

According to Mao Vireak, the body was preliminarily identified as Walker’s by associates who recognised his clothing and shoes, but the specialist had taken skin and bone samples for more definitive testing.

“The doctor has completely done this work, and he has already left for Thailand,” he said. “According to the doctor, the results of body’s examination will be released within four or five weeks.”

Neither the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok nor a representative of Walker’s family could be reached for comment yesterday.
