Thailand to become ASEAN food hub

5-8-2014-11-01-49-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The private sector says Thailand has strong potential to become an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) food hub, claiming the kingdom has only to improve its material production technology.

CP Group’s senior officer Sarasin Weerapol said during a seminar on the theme ‘Thailand as the central AEC food hub’ organised by Thammasat University’s ASEAN Study Centre.

He said governmental agencies and the private sector should support the food industry by formulating development strategies, such as establishing a fund to assist operators in the food industry and to back various food production initiatives.

Despite the fact that Thailand’s food industry has a rather challenging future, he said the sector does have good credentials with long established expertise, adding that the demand for food would always grow in line with the world’s population.

He said in 20 years the world population would likely jump from 7 billion to 9 billion.

Meanwhile agricultural land may be dedicated to other uses, making the possibility of food shortages very likely, he said.

However the issue can be addressed with the use of technology to increase the productivity and food supply stability.

He also said Thailand should spearhead the development of such technology in order to stay on top in providing sufficient food for its to eat, while giving itself the upper hand in food trading with other countries.

Thailand already the food Hub.

Thais are having more lunch brakes than the hours they work.

Beats me, how they can eat every half an hour in this country.

In there dreams.!

The hub of grub.

"how they can eat every half an hour in this country."

Easy explanation... They wake up from their napping.

2 hubs in a week.....

More technology, more machines, more pesticides, more herbicides, more GMOs... more health problems, more money for the pharmachemical industries.

Here's a simple technology they could start with: irrigation.

I used to live in an area of Thailand that has little food production given the land size - much of it is turned over to eucalyptus hybrids and cassava that go to mainly produce paper and biofuels. The reason is that all that land is not irrigated but relies on natural rainfall. The plants chosen are hardy to such variable conditions.

Growing food crops is a precarious business if you can't control the water supply.

Thailand the hub of hubs!

For easier reference we should number all of these hubs. I declare this hub #437

"...claiming the kingdom has only to improve its material production technology."

When you are on the bottom, there's nowhere else to go but up.

Here's country that has a recognized problem with formalin being used to dangerous health levels in some cases and generally seems an endemic situation within the produce industry, yet nothing clear is being done to regulate the use of formalin. And here's a country that decides that overpaying market value for rice, a perishable commodity, and stockpiling it for years is a good idea, but deems itself qualified to be the a food hub. Good Lord! Is there a contest going on in this country to see who can say the most absurd thing?

Yes it's quite a contest and everyone's a winner.

So what happened to the "electrical appliances hub" they only announced a few days ago?

And the "medical hub", the "advanced education hub", the "regional transportation hub", the "processed food hub", the "rail transport hub", the 'movie animation hub", the "financial services hub", and all those other high-flying hubs that are touted practically on a weekly basis?

Meanwhile, all those hubs that already exist are constantly being swept under the carpet for obscure reasons, for example the "prostitution hub", the "human trafficking hub", the "protected wildlife smuggling hub", the "hypocrisy hub", the "xenophobia hub", the "Shinawatra family cronyism and nepotism hub", the "worst car drivers in the world hub", and last but not least the "annoying-overuse-of--the-word-hub hub".

So, being the hub of poisoned food products is not good enough for now? That will boost the formaldehyde sales significantly.

Expertise in Thailand ???

Yes in storage of millions ton rice, but not in selling the rice.

Look over the borders my friend and you see many companies in the world who does much better.

Who is the biggest food manufacturer in Thailand? I am sure it isn't a Thai company

Keep dreaming, because Thailand is on an another planet.

Asean is going to import cheap food into Thailand.

Thailand's "hubs" and Suthep "final pushes". Which one is more ridiculous?

..................red apologists posts!!!

i propose they change the name to : hubland in stead of the other one

Rice with rice, sticky rice with rice, rice with sticky rice .. and if you're really lucky something colorful on the top.

Yes, with such overwhelming variety of dishes Thai grub is sure to conquer the entire world.

but hey....rice is okay if you want a thousand of something.......(just joking)

Thailand to become ASEAN food hub

I have a great idea of how Thailand can become the Asean food hub.....

Provide rice subsidies to the farmers, buy all said rice at inflated prices, hide it in warehouses all over the country, therefore causing a shortage of rice internationally , causing the price of rice to go up considerably , open your warehouses and sell the rice internationally at a huge profit

I am sure this will work...

Since there is a new hubbub about the hub word, here's a list I compiled a while ago. Just for information of course.

Yes NKK is quiet correct and there's more absurd things to come , it has been going on for some time.

Sure, but you need to cut India, Vietnam and Cambodia a piece of the action for them to hold back a while as well. Shouldn't be a problem, just do some OPEC style cartel maneuvering.
