Hello,

I am wanting to live in Koh Samui but I need the Internet to do my work. I have contacted DTAC and they have given me a very general answers as to the speeds I could get.

I am not a computer orientated person and I am having trouble working this stuff out. The company I want to work with require a download speed of 2Mbit/s and a UPLOAD speed of 1.5Mbit/s. I am finding it is often the upload speed that I am struggling to get. I am aware that my computer needs to be of a certain "size", which it is. I can get these speeds in Kuala Lumpur on wifi in a guest house. I know KL has fibre optic cable.

The speed test the site I want to work for uses this address for the speed test:

http://www.docler.net/speed2/

If anyone could run this test and tell me if they get anywhere near the speed I require, it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! But pls keep ur answers as non tech as possible, because although I really am trying to understand, it is just sooo difficult for me.

Thank you, Kelly x

get 3BB optical fiber 30/3 for 1200+vat per month and you"re alright.

multithreading will get you the maximum speed to whatever place you need to connect to :)

Agree with 3BB .... I find the 900 + baht package works just fine .... for Skype etc .... even using the wifi on laptop...thumbsup.gif

If 3BB will deliver to your area! (They will not come near my place - but some would agree with that.)

On Samui - internet is all about location, location, location.

Hi NHJ and Tropicalevo,

Thank u so much for ur replies.

NHJ, what is multithreading? Is that to do with my computer, like cpu or something?? And 3BB, that is the internet provider isn't it?

And Tropicalevo, you mentioned the importance of location (three times!!) so it must be important. Which areas have you found to have the better net, or even which ones to avoid??

Thanks guys, this information was impossible to find else where! But now making rapid headway :)

Your best bet is to go to 3BB office, out side Tesco Chawang and tell them where you want to install, they will be able to tell you .... so have your address with you!

Yes, 3BBis one of the Providers for Internet. And the location part comes into play, some areas are better than others! wink.png

No idea what "multithreading" is either ! blink.pngfacepalm.gif

I live at the furthest NE point of the island and quite a bit of the infrastructure is 'fragile'. I am a few kilometers away from the major roads. Cannot get fibre-optic, cable TV etc - not enough users. (No electtricity for most of the day yesterday!)

I would guess that as long as you are near the main roads - you should be good.

Bang Rak, Plai Laem, Choengmon - iffy. (I am sure that some people get good service there, but a lot do not.)

I have heard that the area near the IT centre - maenam is good.

Other people will give you an idea of good areas - I do not know any. sad.png

The 3BB office outside of Tesco Chawang told me they could not tell me where can be installed and that I had to call their support line 1350.

My girlfriend works on the Internet from here and basically it is a painful experience. We are getting Fiber but for her connection sped is not the biggest issue. If it is for you just be aware that as 3BB will tell you advertised speeds are a best case. Basically a lot of their infrastructure is shared and things slow down at busy times or as more users adopt services. You can get business grade services these are the same speed lines and cost about 3 or 4 times as much. They should offer more reliable speeds but unlike anywhere else in the world I have come across they told me they still do not guarantee you will get the speeds you pay for or service levels (% availability etc).

For us the big problems have been :-

- Latency whenever you go out of Thailand (this is simplistically how quickly a packet of data can get to the address you are talking to and back). This is not much of an issue for most people. If it is for you there are VPN solutions which help but do not totally overcome it.

- We get power cuts on the island, Sometimes we go a long time without one and then we may get several close together. You will need UPSs for your computer and modems to cover for any very short outages and a generator (with a good stock of fuel) for longer ones.

- The Internet also goes down fairly frequently. Often only very briefly and most people would not notice but it drops the girlfriend out of her remote sessions. On fewer occasions we get longer outages. We usually have at least two service providers to act as a backup buta couple of times lately all the services have been down together as they share some infrastructure.

Don't want to come across too negative. It is possible to work here over the Internet. The girlfriend does but 3 or 4 times a year I keep well out of the way when she just cannot get on at key times.

Well as Tropicalevo said location location location.... it does vary.... my location is good, so was my last place, although not too far apart (4kms or so) Also watch UK television etc with no buffering! (using Hola)

When I moved last year, 3 BB office was able to tell me from their computer....about connection to new house... (usually the guy in there, with the "lazy eye", is best and most helpful to deal with) .... Very rare for my service to go down...

As for electric, for the most part it's much better than it was in most areas, than a couple of years or so ago.... thumbsup.gif Seems a few areas still having problems facepalm.gif

Interesting read here (although not Thai related) http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/netflix-speed-rankings-place-bell-1st-rogers-last-1.2639965?cmp=rss

Seems Europe is best place for internet speed.... wink.png

Yes it is possible to do work here over the net, many people do it! thumbsup.gifwai2.gif

Lom, if it is not too personal, can I ask do u use 3BB as a provider because I can't seem to find "CAT 10/2" connection on the 3BB site? And which area of the island are u getting those speeds from? kelly x

OMG!! Thank u Tchooptip!!! Yay! 2 results say I can get the speeds I want, like it is possible!!

Thank u everyone for being sooo helpful.

So, now my next step is to find a place to rent that I can get the internet speeds I want. So, how do I go abt that??

So option one: get a short list of rentals I would like, ask the property management what type of net connection they have..and then if the net is not good go to 3BB and look for the guy with the 'lazy eye'.

Option two..????

I am in Penang atm and will go to Koh Samui tomorrow (prob by the dreaded bus!!) and start checking out places. I have no other idea on how to find a home with the 'good' net. Any suggestions would be most helpful!!! I will leave Samui on the 20th to go back to Aust for 3 wks and then come back...maybe to my home!? That would be nice xx

Again, thank u to everybody who has contributed o this post xx

CAT = Communication Authorities of Thailand, it is a state enterprise. Their 10/2 service has been replaced by 20/3 so I guess it's time for me to cancel the old contract and enter the new one, price is the same. CAT is in my opinion the most reliable internet provider and the one with the lowest ping time to US and Europe (closely followed by 3BB who are somewhat cheaper). ToT and True are the other main competitors but I consider them to be crappy.

Both ISPs 3BB and TOT offers hi-speed connections, on paper within your requirements.

Bear in mind, that the cheap so-called “private” lines are shared, typically up to 10 users. Some times you will get full speed, sometimes others “steal” speed from you.

You can buy business-oriented lines with less shares, for example 5 only, or a dedicated line, but that costs – now you shall pay for the full connection, something like 3,500+ bath a month.

I have tried both, a dedicated line with fixed IP and a cheap shared line for private use, but when connection to the World, outside Thailand or Southeast Asia, there is no or not much difference. The problems seems to be the traffic in/out of the country – or just Koh Samui – and how busy the routers and the Internet highways are around the World. Normally it works Okay, but sometimes it can be slow.

Today I use a 600 baht/month TOT fixed shared line – found their service better and much faster than 3BB – and a wireless back up from DTAC, in case of cable break or other faults. Great, DTAC use TOT for fixed line, so when TOT for example have a major router problem in Surat Thani, then DTAC is also down.

Your Docler Networks Speed test link reads 13-05-2014 at 20:55 (lt) for my (shared) 7Mb (500Kb up) line:

Your download bandwidth: 486.30 kbit/sec

Your upload bandwidth: 308.94 kbit/sec

Your test reference number: RN1404982

TOT bandwidth test (internal Thailand) at 21:00:

Download speed: 6.12 Mbps (764.8 KB/sec)

Upload speed: 0.53 Mbps (66.8 KB/sec)

If Internet speed is important I would think a position close to major infrastructure. You can check with 3BB (office in front of Tesco) and TOT (office opposite Bo Phut temple at Ring Road intersection to Fisherman Village) if they have any recommendations of area. (Sorry, I don't know about True.)

Often bungalow, house and villa is best found by browsing around – and of course the helpful link from NotMySelf – size and price range also a question of where to look for it…

Wish you good luck... smile.png

Today is Sunday!! But don't worry, it took me a bit to remember!! I have just booked flight back to Thailand. Arrive Bkk 22nd may, spend a couple of nights there and then wanting to come here and find a home. Min 6 months I am looking at initially to rent....if all goes well, then indefinitely :) I have pm u my phone number. If I miraculously find a home between now and Tue, I don't mind paying rent/deposit while I am in Aust. Just wanting a home with the net to work from!!!

multi threaded download/upload is to open more than 1 connection to the site in order to max out the bandwidth, bacisally what download accelerators are doing.
