Plans to move to LOS

Featured Replies

Hi all you have probably been asked this a few times, however i will give it a go. Where is a in your opinion the place to live in Thailand. Possibly set up a business for my thai gf who is a hairdresser in Bkk at the moment. I would like a lifestyle that is comfortable of course i love the people and the culture oh and the foods not bad! I have about 20 years of working left in Australia but after alot of visits to most parts i think its where i want to end up!.

Writing this from Koh Samet which is nice.

I figure if i buy now i will own my retirement home when i retire. I am in my early 40's

Thank everyone.

Dave

Depends on to many variables, one mans paradise is another mans hell, best you take some time and tour around to see what fits with you.

Thailand is so diverse, from beaches to Mountains and everything in between, go "walkabout" and enjoy to see where is more suited to you.

Enjoy and Good luck.thumbsup.gif

Not if its landed property you wont, you do know about the land ownership laws in Thailand ?

how long you known said GF ?

Are you planning on living in Thailand now, or involved in a long distance relationship i.e. periodic visits ?

not trying to p*ss on your plan's but be careful what your getting yourself into...seriously,

but suppose your next response will be she's different...rolleyes.gif

There seems to be a hair salon on every corner, everywhere. Sometimes they face each other on all diagonals.

Can't see how another one would hurt.

Dave, you seem like a nice guy (pleasant post). Take care.

Remember one rule in LOS ; A fool and his money are soon parted.

Now go forth and enjoy, but never forget the rule as it applies to EVERY situation here.

Some sulks......deliver or walk away.

Thailand is all about Family

So if your GF is anything like my wife, I would say the best place to retire would be some where near her family.

Good to read that you are happy living near your inlaws.....many will hold a different opinion about living near their inlaws.

Ok just be careful what you get yourself involved in as regards "retirement homes" and setting business' up in Thailand for someone, most certainly if your not here full time.

Definitely read up on the laws of business and land ownership. Look for places where new or recent factories have been built. Good luck on your endeavor.

Koh Chang is not what it used to be but there are still some nice quite spots on the east coast.

The OP is considering the best place to hole up in LOS... in twenty years time.

It's pretty difficult to predict what the Republic of Thailand's alien immigration and house/land ownership policy will be at that juncture.

Sorry, my crystal ball isn't working this morning. Must be the heat.

Well, we all know the wife would be happy near her family

and most of as have learned that a happy wife = a happy melaugh.png

and we don' need to live right next to them or living with them if we did not want, but IMO I think it is nice , a least for the wife, to be near her parents.

For me it helps that I adore her parents, Her father is respectable, serious, old guy who is always working on something, her Mom a nice lady , always cleaning or cooking, Both a pleasure to be around. smile.png

I realize that not everyone feels that way, but I think that at the very least an effort should be made.

Dont buy anything here till you are ready to move .save your money. If you are talking 20 years, you are still going to need at least 70,000 aus dollars just to live on .You will be not eligable to get the aus pension till you are 70 . At the moment it is 65 and a half . I think they are going to change that to 70 by the time you want to retire. Also if you move here at the age of 60, before you get the old age pension you will have to go bak to Aus and live there for 2 years to qualify for the pension. So think what you are doing mate. They are real pr*cks our goverment. If you like the cooler seasons as you will tire of the heat all year, move up north ,chiang mai or the quiter place chiang rai.

GO THE BOMBERS

All good advice!...Caution being the salient point.

You might be best off if you have money to invest is to buy a small rental in your home country (you can own property there I presume ....you cannot in Thailand unless it is a condo or in company name). By investing in your home country in a small rental ( small home or duplex) you, again, presumably can get a loan and hopefully the rental income will pay most of the mortgage and expenses ....and in time even provide a positive cash flow. AND in 20-30 years time you will own it outright wherein it will supplement your retirement income or can sell and hopefully have a nice capital gain!.....That is what I did 40 years ago and now life in Thailand is great!

Good Luck....again, as said , be cautious ....who knows who'll you be with in 40 years (prepare for a MAJOR sulk! if you buy at home instead of in THailand)

if you are not planning on living here for the next 20 years, can't see much benefit of putting your money here, especially not in 1 particular place (and/or person)

over the next 20 years you have time to see all of thailand and anyway a lot will change over that period

it might not even be called thailand by then ..........:D

I try to live as far away as possible from the in laws. IMO it's a massive mistake to live nearby family, for numerous and obvious reasons.

I don't think as far as possible is necessarily best. We live a fair hike away from wife's parents, but not so far that we can't get some help - like when we need somebody to watch the house for us, or help out with a big task - which is good. But I wouldn't want to live close enough that everybody visits whenever they feel like it. You have to get the distance right.

This video covers it perfectly:

Dave, my 2 cents, open a business for yourself, not her. It's a country of over 65 million. Business can't be all bad.

I say go for it.

I think you got it just right, not so close that they come over every day, not so far that if they come over they stay overnight.laugh.png

Yup and the factor that worries me most above political chaos and energy deficit is . . . water. Having done the plan to hole up in Issan I've watched the place get drier and drier.

I've also seen it recommended to live no closer than 100km to the family.

That way they won't be around weekly looking for a loan / borrow your new pickup.
