Hello,

I want to find people who might be interested in forming a cohort for a Master of Education in TESL through Framingham State University (FSU). They currently offer a Master Ed. in International Teaching degree that I am currently applying for. However, a TESL program would be more beneficial to me. The M Ed. TESL program from FSU is only offered in Korea because there is currently a lack of interest in having it offered in BKK. Hopefully we can change this.

The FSU program is run through the Wells International School near On Nut in BKK. As it stands now, I will have to travel to BKK to attend a 2 course session in April and July of 2015 and 2016. Additionally, there is a February online course component in 2016. I was told that this program meets in April and July to mainly accommodate the international school teachers’ schedule. Perhaps if we form a TESL cohort we can switch months to fit whatever schedule works best for the group.

I have spoken to an emailed the BKK coordinator of the program and she is lovely lady that is more than willing and competent to answer any questions one may have. She and her website state that the TCT recognize the Master of Education Interanational Teaching degree in terms of gaining a TL. I believe they will recognize the TESL one too but we are currently working on finding this bit of information out.

I am happy to discuss this topic further with any interested people. Hope there is some interest out there.

Update **Master of Education in TESL** Update

I have heard from the BKK based coordinator of the FSU Master’s program that “FSU is definitely willing to open a new cohort for TESL provided that we gather at least 17 students to enroll in the program…….If we can gather at least 17 students then yes, we will definitely open a new cohort for TESL”.

FSU wants 2O people to start a new cohort. Counting myself and two others from a previous interested person’s list we need 17 more. I urge anyone that is considering this program to contact the program coordinator at *email edited out*

Don't you mean TESOL? Any links to the university? Do the moe recognise this degree? Just a few questions.

The other relevant information that everyone would want to know is going to be the classic questions about time and money. What is the course duration and what does it cost?

And, of course, considering the current change in Visa laws, can the Wells International School provide a visa for students of this program? This might make the program more attractive and bring out the required number of people for the course (or more!)

Hello bendywire and bino.

Thank you for your questions and replies.

Here are two websites that are full of information about the Master of Education in TESL program that I want offered in BKK.

http://framingham.edu/graduate-studies/international-education-program/teaching-english-as-a-second-language.html

http://www.wells-school.com/framingham/

I do not know if the MOE will recognize the program but I do know that the websites and coordinator of the International Teaching M Ed. program state that a TL can be obtained from the TCT. It is also my understanding that the TCT states earning an education degree is grounds for granting a TL.

This program does not offer a visa. The program is Open only to educators/professionals living and working overseas. Your visa will have to come from your employer or spouse I'm afraid.

The M Ed. TESL program has 10 courses. The cost of each course is US$550.00 plus a registration fee of US$20.00 for each session (1 session=2 courses). The International Teaching program has 9 courses in BKK and one online course. There is also a US $100 application fee for the entire program. The TESL program has 10 courses. I am currently unsure if this course will be online or in BKK.

As far as the time and course duration please see my original post.

Again many thanks for replying.

I looked at the website for this program last year and was also disappointed that the M.ED TESL program wasn't being offered.

Just to make sure I've read your post clearly, would this mean that the course would begin in February 2015 if a cohort is formed?

I'm a possible maybe. I would have to check with my work, finances, and husband before committing to the program.

(It's my husband's "turn" to go back to school, but he doesn't seem as enthusiastic about getting back into classes as I am.)

Hello janejira,

Thank you for responding and for your interest in the FSU program. If we can manage to get a TESL cohort formed, it will probably start in April of 2015. That is when the next International Teaching cohort will begin. I am talking with many other folks on several other teaching sites and trying to get a consensus of when folks would want the courses offered. It would personally be better for me if classes were offered in April and October. The current classes for the International Teaching degree are in April and July. There is also a on time February online course.

Please send me a private message and I can put you in contact with the director of the program. Please tell he of your interest in starting a TESL program.

Please also let me know if I can help to clarify anything else for you or strong arm the husband into giving you want you want!

Thank you for starting this.I am definitely interested. I learned about this program several years ago and have checked with the university several times trying to find where i could get the TESL degree. I was even considering going to Korea for the the short times they meet. I kept intending to make a post to find people but never got around to it. So thanks again.

Another benefit you did not list is that your degree is from an accredited university in the US (so unlike degrees earned locally it will be recognized by foreign countries and back in the US should you decide to move back). Your degree does not specify that you attended a special program. Your degree would look the same as students who attended the university in Massachusetts. It is a state university in Massachusetts.

I will PM you to get the directors email address.

Hello orchidlady,

Thank you for responding to my post. The information you added is very true indeed. The FSU program is fully accredited in the USA.

I also have toyed with the idea of going to Korea but I think it is too cost prohibited for me to do so.

I am very pleased to hear of your interest in joining a TESL cohort. Please do send me a PM so that I can get the director's email address to you.
