First Army Division chief denies setting up taskforce to crackdown on red shirts
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- First Army Area Division Maj Gen Apirat Kongsompong on Wednesday denied that his division had set up a taskforce in preparation for launching crackdowns on red-shirt protesters.

United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship chairman Jatuporn Promphan said at the red-shirt rally site on Utthayan Road that the Army was preparing to crack down on red-shirt demonstrators and urged them to turn out in larger numbers.

Jatuporn said the First Army Division had received an order to suppress the red-shirts in the same way as had happened in 2010.

But Apirat said his division had been assigned by the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order to ensure security on Utthayan Road and take care of the demonstrators.

Apirat said troops from the Ninth Infantry Division were deployed to guard the demonstrators.

An Army source said Jatuporn made the statement in an attempt to prompt more red shirts to join the demonstration on Utthayan Road, which is now in its fifth day.

No doubt the reds are sh** scared:

"Meanwhile, some of those who were responsible for aggressive actions against the red shirts have been promoted, including “Col Apirat Kongsompong, commander of the 11th Infantry Regiment (King’s Guards) which played a key role in dealing with red shirt demonstrators…” and Colonel Kiat Srinaka of the Queen’s Guards and “the influential military clique called Burapha Payak” who “played a key role in the clash with red shirt demonstrators at the Khok Wua intersection on April 10.”

These people have no hesitation in placing people in danger for no reason than their own selfish self imposed propaganda, they would do more good to turn the country around by lobbying for the rice farmers to get their entitlements , under the rice scheme scam plus some compensation from the previous bunch of malcontents, than flogging the brand name of Shinawatra. bah.gif

After six solid months of protesting by yellows, a yellow voice is raised against those who protest. Admit it. You're jealous the army won't guard your folks, right?

But I'm curious. Why would anyone at any time under any circumstances be in danger at Utthayan Road? The only danger I can see is if they are attacked. I can't see any other possible danger in that place or for a long way around it. Not just Khun chainarong.

Anyone have any idea what the danger is (or might be) at and around the Buddhamonthorn area, specifically on Utthayan Road? Other than snipers, sappers or artillery fire from a rogue and angry general with a personal vendetta who can't be trusted to obey orders and currently isn't doing so, I mean?

I've seen what reds could do to a city in 2010, but so far did not see any burning building set up ablaze by yellows .... I hope the Army had learned their lessons in handling 2010 demonstrations and this time they will be better prepared.

That's exactly what Jatuporn is trying to do. It's been five days, and he still can't get people to attend. He has been getting more and more desperate as the red shirts are simply not showing up. Some are even embarrassingly suing for not being paid. So naturally, Jatuporn has to dip into his bag of ready-made conspiracy theories. Problem is, he's used them all up before.

Incidentally, on May 2, Nuttawut challenged Suthep to compare rally numbers on May 14. Well, that happens to be today.

This is yesterday. What do you bet for tonight? I bet about the same, maybe a bit bigger. And don't you try to past-post me, now, I'm watching!

It's actually not fair. The reds are going for size right now, Suthep is hiding in the air-con building and has only a small crowd hanging on outside. It really should be a no-contest day. But on the weekend, the reds won by quite a bit.

Yes, we all realise this. And the army killed many people in 1973 and 1976 and 1992. And the mob occupied the airport. And the red shirts occupied Silom and shot at people. Yes.

Or, as they would say in court: Non-responsive yeronner.

Try again: Why would anyone at any time under any circumstances be in danger at Utthayan Road that would require an army guard?

Influential military clique?

Silly journalist.

Burapha Phayak is the name of a regiment of House Guards belonging to the 2nd Infantry Division. The name means "Tiger of The East".

You're both not wrong. It is as you write. It is ALSO picked up by any breathing Thai as soon as you say "Burapha Payak" and they think of General Prayuth and his, well, influential toadies. It's like if you say "Class 8" all brains turn to "Yutthasak". Double meaning.

Here are two Thais talking about it, for a Thai newspaper. The newspaper is approved, vetted, stamped by the Thai Visa Seal of Readableness.

This guy is running out of money and now he's trying to find new ways to fool some of the left over red shirts. The number of red shirts are declining by the hour, now they demand the money first before going anywhere. Fool me once same on you, fool me twice shame on me...you can teach old dog new tricks.

Well at any time, that would be, if you are not a red shirt, yes, because they are constantly causing havoc. And to pre-empt: Stop saying "prove it" it doesn't need to be proven, WE are not the police and they won't even TRY to prove it. Suthep's people get shot at with grenade launchers and what have you.

Have you seen the photos of the Suthep's people? Looks like quite a bit more to me, but no one (reliable) is reporting numbers, so we keep on moving back and forth. Great camera angle by the way for the reds rally!

And for something different, shame for not paying those red shirts that filed a complaint! Come on, that's what they come for!

All in all, it seems like the bigger d*ck theory to me. Both have lots of protesters, both are in the way of elected parties (In the "care taker Government and the Opposition) and both are preventing a way out. The two biggest parties need to sit down and find a way out of this impasse.

More desperation from Jatuporn.

CAPO tells the world they will assign a force to guard the reds then Jutaporn comes out and says the ones that are sent to guard them are there to crackdown on them.

He should have a talk to Chalerm so they can get their stories together.

Laughable that a red posts a photo of a soldier with a pump action shotgun which fires rubber bullets.

Then tries to make something of the fact that the officers who risked their lives to clear out the red rioters were promoted, which is fair enough as they were protecting the country against an armed insurrection.

While conveniently failing to mention that the leader of the 2010 army clear out of the red rioters sold out and was taken on as a PT MP.

The soldier with shotgun is, at that time Maj. Apirat Konsopong outside of Thaicom before they were evacuated facing red invasion....

you really don't read a lot do you or even keep up with ALL the latest news. Chalerm has stated he is now protecting the red protest sites from "attacks", maybe that means that there are now soldiers appointed to "protect" the reds under Chalerms orders, would suggest you start learning to understand what is being written by your own side in the future, makes you look pretty pathetic really.

Isn't Chalerm still acting head of CAPO (even though he shouldn't be)? Wasn't it him that assigned the army and police to protect the Red Shirts fearing they would be attacked by the yellow shirts? If the Red Shirts don't want protection, why waste the man power? It doesn't seem like the army is doing anything other than taking orders from the government anyways. If they were on the yellow shirts side, these matters wouldn't have gone this far, instead they seem to be as neutral as can be. You have bombs and grenades exploding in the city, seems like it's out of the polices' league to me, the army should have stepped in a long time ago, but they haven't. That alone should be saying something.

No plans to crack down on red shirts: Army division chief

PANYA THIOSANGWAN
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- THE ARMY'S First Division, King's guard chief Maj Gen Apirat Kongsompong yesterday denied setting up a taskforce in preparation for a crackdown on red-shirt protesters.

This was in response to an announcement at the red-shirt rally site on Aksa Road by United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) chairman Jatuporn Prompan that the Army was planning to crack down on the protesters and urged them to turn out in larger numbers.

Jatuporn claimed that the First Army Division had been told to suppress the red shirts in the same way as they were in 2010.

However, Apirat said the Centre for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) had ordered his division to ensure security on Aksa Road and take care of the protesters.

He added that troops from the 9th Infantry Division were deployed to guard the crowds.

An Army source said Jatuporn was using this an excuse to encourage more red shirts to join the rally, which kicked off on Saturday.

Meanwhile, CAPO's Tarit Pengdith said yesterday it was clear that members of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) had invaded Government House by cutting the chain and climbing over the fence without the military's consent.

The CAPO, military and police officers will hold a press conference on the issue today.

Separately, Colonel Banphot Poonpien, spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), said the agency was still waiting for an answer from the Election Commission and Council of State as to who will take over as ISOC director now that Yingluck Shinawatra has been dismissed.

As for the request to see if Robert Amsterdam, a Canadian lawyer who represents former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, is affecting Thailand's security, Banphot said this matter should be taken to the Immigration Police or Interior Minister. Amsterdam was seen delivering a speech at the red-shirt rally stage.
