So, to add to the weirdness of the whole thing...

Been today to the school (a major one: Pro Language, time square Bldg, in Bangkok) get the papers to "activate" my first ED visa in laos.

Big surprise is, unlike what we've been told before or heard, or read anywhere, the maximum lengh of study for 1 cycle at the school is for 6 monthes only. Yes, for Thai language...

According to them, after 6 monthes we have to ask to make a second cycle of 6 monthes, and at this point, pass a simple test in immigration to be autorized to do so. After that we can go on for 6 more monthes (with extension every 3 monthes, I suppose), an then do the same process again to reach the end of the second year, after a second test. I must add you still have to pay for 1 year of classes from the beginning.

So I guess the first school I contacted didn't told me such idiotic things after all.

Is that going to be the normal process everywhere from now on?

According to one employee there, it's a pretty new thing...

It could be useful to hear from other school directors / students

Have a good day.

Ah-ha ...same school as I was asking about re 6 monthly test in another thread. They never said anything to me before I started though (or since then), it came out of the blue the other day . The test is apparently simple, but I wonder what happens if you fail ? Extra homework ? free remedial lessons ? frog-marched to the airport ? I bet you don't get a refund for the last part of the course that you have already paid for !

Another point that comes to mind, a couple of people in my class had what we thought were "wrong" course finishing dates on the visa extension paperwork, but they might be the end of the first phase of the course. Immigration would only extend the visa up until that date, so in my case I only got 2 month extension. You might be unlucky and find that you need an extension 2 or 3 weeks before the 6 months is up.... for example your first 6 month course ends july 15 but your current visa extension needs renewing july 1. If the school puts july 15 as end of course, Immigration can only extend your visa up to that date (that's what the officer told me)

Oh that I can answer pretty easily since it's an official test:

it's the airplane ticket under a week or something

It would be hard to expect a straight forward answer to a question on a general forum about visas as this appears to be a company policy or issue that needs to be answered by them

since there is some people from school advertising for their companies or working for them on those forums, I guess it shouldn't be too hard to expect some answer from people about official immigrations laws if they have been aware of them. That was exactly the point of this thread more than a month ago, when I heard, by some school, something about what is appear to happens now...

No problems for Walen students. If there is any trouble I will update you.

As there seems to be numerous posts about ED visa problems and changes maybe it is time for Mr Walen to give an update.

I am getting a lot of bashing here from many members so I try to limit my posing here to keep them happy. You may always contact Walen School for more info.

My Facebook: Mac Walen - www.facebook.com/macwalen - you are welcome to add me, never too many friends.

As you are a sponsor of TV I would think it best in your interest to give as much information HERE as possible to help folk with decisions........... thumbsup.gif

I guess now, people should't sign up for any school before being sure of what they have to say about all of this.

Does anyone have any experience or have heard anything official on Thai Ed Visas being scrutinized or challenged with respect to the new crackdown on fradulent visas? I ask because I am curious if the junta will look into these visas as well as the tourist visas.

All I can say is: I've just passed the visa controls and coming back from Lao. My wife and I have been interrogated by the officers there (nothing much just 2 or 3 questions). They seems to check for how long you want to stay with an Ed visa.
