Posted on the embassy’s website, the warning message says U.S. citizens are advised to stay alert, exercise caution, and monitor media coverage.US citizens are also urged to avoid areas where there are protest events, large gatherings, or security operations and follow the instructions of Thai authorities.The message added that even demonstrations meant to be peaceful, they can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.The US State Department has earlier made known that it is concerned about the political crisis in Thailand and noted that the military’s declaration of martial law must be temporary and not undermine democracy. Lite Beer Posted May 20, 2014 Share Posted May 20, 2014 Commercial attaches told to clarify martial law to foreign businesses BANGKOK: -- Commercial attaches were encouraged Tuesday to clarify the declaration of martial law in the country to foreign investors and businesses in their respective countries that it has no impact on Thai exports and the scheduled trade expo. At the final day of the meeting with the Ministry of Commerce which was put off, they were told that the trade expo, Thaifex 2014, will still kick off Wednesday on schedule. The meeting between commercial attachés and the Thai private sector was to find ways to boost Thai exports during the latter half of the year. But it was put off today, after the Army Commander-in-Chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha declared the martial law in the country early this morning.Director of International Trade Promotion (ITP) Nantawan Sakultanak revealed that an internal meeting between Thai commerce officials and the commercial attachés would be held first, then a summary of the meeting would be discussed with the private sector later.She said she has asked the 64 commercial attachés participating in the meeting to clarify the implementation of the martial law and the current situation in Thailand to their respective countries, in order to create confidence among foreign investors.The country’s trading and exports could still be carried out as usual, while the holding of the Thaifex World of Food Asia 2014, from May 21-25 at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani would still go ahead as planned.She said that more than 4,000 global food entrepreneurs have decided to take part in the event and the department has estimated that more than 25,000 international purchasers would be visiting the venue.Thai director of international trade promotion to Japan also conceded that the declaration of the martial law in Thailand has affected Japanese investors’ travels for trade talks in the country.
