BANGKOK: -- Police found four tigers inside an abandoned car in Udon Thani's Muang district yesterday morning. The tigers, kept in plastic boxes tied up with wires, were still alive and believed to be around two or three years of age.

Officers said the car had hit a motorcycle earlier in the day and sped away, before being abandoned when one of its tyres was punctured. The car's engine was still running when police arrived at the scene.

Further investigation found that somebody had placed an order for four tigers.

"Each tiger can fetch about Bt300,000," Udon Thani's deputy police chief Colonel Surin Chaichomphu said, adding that rich people in a neighbouring country often took tigers in as pets to show off their wealth.

According to witnesses, the car driver had jumped into a pick-up truck that had apparently come to pick him up.

Surin went on to say that police had identified the car owner as Chidchai Boriboon, who will be summoned for questioning.

Paponwat Chaiarkarapong, from the Protected Area Administration Regional Office 10, said the tigers had clearly been sedated for easy transportation.

"They must have been raised in a farm as they showed no signs of anxiety around humans. Also their claws had been removed," he said, adding that the tigers would be nursed to health at a wildlife sanctuary before they are released in wilderness later

Quite a few charges likely but the driver will be summoned for questioning, why not arrested ?

Hard Work ?

They are going to release tigers without claws back into the wilderness? Is that normal procedure?

Release hand-raised tigers into the wild with no claws. Yeah. Smart.

Also. HTF do you get 4 2-3 year old tigers in a car? Got to be a misprint. 3-4 months is more likely.

Stupid story.

Pic would have been cool.

I can believe the 4 tigers in car story, but how they managed to fit 4 golf bags in a car is really amazing.

worse still they arent afraid of humans

More weapons of mass destruction in cars. When will it stop.smile.png

No news about a driver of the motorcycle being hit by this &(******

Pictures all over the news with police officers near the tigers but NO word whatsoever about any casualties.

Maybe the motorcycle driver also fled the scene?

I remember the old advert of putting a Tiger in the tank, but this is ridiculous!

Maybe the tigers eaten him already

Hand reared tigers released into the wild is asking for trouble. One hopes the people responsible know what they are doing and it is done in secret. I've had first hand experience a few years back when we hand reared an Asiatic Fox whose mother had been killed. Finally after much searching we did find a place that took the animal and had an effective plan to rehabilitate her. This was only after trekking far and wide only to find that even the wildlife rehab centre were not only uninterested but belligerently negligent. Once we found a place with the enthusiasm and expertise we were very relieved. The director of the park told us a tale in which Nong Khai police had intercepted a truck with about 4000 wild snakes, venomous and non venomous all loaded in together, by the time the truck arrived at the park, some 4(400km) only about 500 were alive.

Of course, no Thai rich people would do such a thing!

Could be anybody, really.

It is a funny sentence...sort of like ordering a pizza.

Seriously though, if we take the report on the level, this does show good investigative work by the Police already. This means they collected that information from someone beside the driver since he has not been brought in for questioning as of the article being published.

Thai police may not be honest but there can do proper investigations when they are of a mind to.

Not hard work, rather commonsense police work and one reason why you should not quit your dayjob and try out the for the force ;-)

A witness describes the driver hopping out of the car and jumping into another vehicle so first the police must establish who that driver was. It could be the owner, it could be someone he lent the car to knowingly or that a relative lent the car to and without the owners knowledge. It could be the car was "borrowed".

So the way this works is you "question" the owner as to his whereabouts at the time of the accident and if friends or co-workers can corroborate his story and place him somewhere else. They can possibly bring the witness in to ID him as the driver.

Thanks for the advice. i was in the police for 30 years and retired as a Det. Chief Inspector.'

Love your words like ' could ', ' can ' and possibly. Yes if they bother.

Must have been a very big car to hold 4 tigers. And super thick plastic box. Maybe they were stuffed tiger toys. That would make sense.

My thoughts exactly. Adolescent tigers are taught how to hunt by their mother. How are they going to survive in the wilderness?

Maybe it's a very large enclosure that just gives the impression of being wilderness and they will continue to be fed by humans. smile.png

Edit: removing the word 'be' before 'continue'.

". . . . and nursed back to health. . . . " did you read that?

......and how about the person that ordered them....it says that the tigers were clearly ordered by someone....

You must have been a lousy cop, if you can't read: the OP clearly states that the owner will be questioned. You write driver, but that is your and only your big mistake!
