Thai shellfish

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me with the Thai script for these?

1. HOI KALA PANG HA

This is listed as the name for 2 types of shells:

a, Black-lipped pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera)

b. Fan shell (Crassostrea lugubris/belcheri)

2. HOI KNONG THALEH

Type of abalone (possibly Haliotis ruber)

3. HOI MEED-KOAN

Jack knife clam (Ensis malaccensis)

4. HOI LEB MUE

Piddock (Pholas australiasiae)

5. HOI OOD

Turban shell (Turbo cornutus)

6. HOI CHALAB

Windowpane oyster (Placuna placenta). Apparently also called HOI GRAJOK (หอยกระจก).

7. HOI JOP

Fan shell (Pinna bicolor, Atrina pectinata & Atrina vexilum).

8. HOI JOOB

This is not a shellfish, but a pond snail (Sintaia ingallsiana).

Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.

Dear AyG,

Thanks for the information. It looks like a helpful site, however I could not find any of the ones I was looking for in it (except for Placuna placenta, which appeared as BLEUK HOI GRA JOK, instead of HOI CHALAB. It has many of the same Thai names applied to different scientific names. If it was the opposite, I could understand.

I also tried to copy the Thai script, one by one, to put them into romanized Thai, but some of them would not copy properly (for example Haliotis iris).

Anyway, thank you for your help.

I hope you are coping with the political situation there OK.

My bad. I only checked the first one on your list, Pinctada margaritifera, which is หอยมุกขอบดํา (and I now note doesn't match your transliteration).

Dear AyG,

Thank you so much for going to all that trouble.

Some of the Thai script didn't appear properly (in 2 and 6).

Really appreciate your help.

Forgot to mention reason, spelling: Turbo coronatus.

Here are 2 & 6 again. Let me know if you still can't read them.

หอยโขงทะเล
หอยแฉลบ

AyG,

The first line is still unreadable. Second line OK.

Thanks for the spelling correction. I'll have to put my glasses on.
