FangFerang
Rampant corruption on both sides, now able to be discovered and prosecuted....but I think only a token amount of yellows will see court. Just a thought. The red shirt supporters of TVF have been effectively told to shut up. The yellow supporters have been given free reign to rant. Centrists, like myself, think the whole thing is a melodrama. Of course I have an opinion about such takeovers, and hold it dear, but this is not the fight for any of us -- except the recently emerged new Thai TVF members who now want to be the thought police (only a few dozen I have seen). Thais have the right to make their own mistakes -- every country has made mistakes, even the Netherlands (who have allowed a Muslim takeover of Potsdam-- yes, Ex-Kaaskop weight lifter, some of us know all about it.... Getting the last word in does not prove your viewpoint is better than another. Having ten people like everything you say does not prove your viewpoint is better than another. In short, your viewpoint is not better than another...some of you talk, but most of you rant and whine like rabid silver-backs. Resume rants. Go have a banana, there are lots here in Thailand. Dogmatix
Remember Thaksin's blacklist in his war against drugs. As people on it reported to the police they were murdered on their way home. Now or Never
Pavin has her/his knickers in a knot. I pity the students having to listen to this clown. Why because he teaches them critical assessment and independent thought? Of course nobody with a fascist agenda would like that! If he teaches them critical assessment and independent thought I would approve... however his students inform me he teaches biased assessment and non independent thought.. His classes are boring and he is unable to maintain focus on his topics let alone maintain his students attention. Your accusation of "fascist " is ludicrous given your hero is a dictator. valvenus
" The leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Charupong said he would not bow to a military that seized the people's power and he called the coup leaders rebels. He said he was hiding in the Northeast and was safe. " Charupong is of course the former interior minister who endorsed a UDD platform that included secession on February 23. So he has good reason to hide. Indeed, he does. As for posting he was safe; so did Oak, right up until a few minutes later when he was marched out of the airport in a perp walk. cacruden
Have no idea who this person is, but I read this: "Pavin Chachavalpongpun, an academic who is on the army’s summons list, has said that he plans to send his pet Chihuahua to report to the junta in his stead." All that came to my head was this was a really really bad idea........ his pet Chihuahua might lick the general's boots and in appreciation be appointed to the new government.... That would teach Pavin as his Chihuahua would be his superior.

Why because he teaches them critical assessment and independent thought?Of course nobody with a fascist agenda would like that! Right wingers do seem to have this hatred of academics for some reason, don't they? You need to study a little history before making such ignorant statements. The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution Sinologists Roderick MacFarquhar and Michael Schoenhals estimate that between 750,000 and 1.5 million people were killed in the violence of the Cultural Revolution, in rural China alone.[116] Mao's Red Guards were given carte blanche to abuse and kill the revolution's enemies.[117] For example, in August 1966, over 100 teachers were murdered by their students in western Beijing alone.[118] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_killings_under_Communist_regimes

This Assoc Prof Pavin Chachavalpongpun of Kyoto University has been one of the most controversial commentators with a clear leaning towards the reds. Some of his comments were outragiously ugly. A pity I never started to document them. People should stop mentioning "democracy" when referring to the so called free and fair election which brought Thaksin's clan and followers to the helm. There are better ways to lie or demonstrating blindness.

Yes we do, we live here. Because of the nepotism and corruption its real hard to convict them. The best we can hope for is a audit of the books now the civil servants don't have to fear for their jobs (and lives) and can give the information about corruption. Now we can clean up and make sure the Shins never take power again. Remember they slashed the budget of the NACC by 60% so they could not fight the corruption of the government. Make some better checks and balances and make sure things are transparent then politicians cant steal (as much) and as a result of that vote buying and inciting violence and paid for protests will be gone as it is a bad investment. So IF we get real good reforms I am for it, but IF the general stays in power I would join your side against him. I just see this as a temporary phase to strengthen the checks and balances the previous government tried to remove. I want anyone who is corrupt to do time.. Suthep included. Now its much easier to prove as now this government can't stop investigations. For the future new strict laws that are enforced would help it not to happen again. If everyone have to do time how about the army that made a fortune on the GT-200 scanners. They paid almost a billion Baht for the GT200 scanners and still insisted several years back that they saved live. Further more Prayuth he sits on the board of Thai Oil PLC and Thai Military Bank so all those rubbish I hear he is not in for the money but for the country is just bullocks. Oh yes, I supported the military coup in 2006 because I thought the Thai army is able to clean up the mess that Thaksin left behind in the South, but Prayuth is a dangerous guy and I put him on par with Suchinda. I wish he would have shown some leadership in the South but this is above his military strategies. The Thai Army should adapt the same way Indonesia did. Get rid of them in all commercial ventures including shut down Ch 5, 7, TGN and TMB and send them to the barracks back. If Thailand really wants reforms they also have to start with the army, police, courts, political parties etc. Edited May 25, 2014 by MobileContent
Melyn
Its mind boggling. People who would be the first to moan about censorship suddenly becoming ardent supporters of it. Why should they be detained? Why should they report? Theyve done nothing wrong. Not even to the coup. In fact their only crime appears to be they refuse to come when ordered. Were they to do so, they would be tacitly accepting that the coup is somehow legitimate. They have a choice as remarked somewhat glibly earlier in this thread, to report or not to report. But the passive tolerance of the outcome, as if this is in some way just a normal day in thailand and we're all in some kind of legal-rational framework here is remarkable. The thread about the dude 'on the run' was brilliant. This is a guy that seems to be committed to HELPING people, being summarily ordered to some kind of 're-education' discussion/detainment, and the coup cheerleaders trumpet their wet brained triumphalism that hes gonna get whats coming to him then! Whats coming to him? Extra funding for the GOOD he seems to be doing for rural people in his country? Then there was the whole 'but the senate's safe! so its still a beautiful day in thailand!' nonsense from the past three days. Fast forward to yesterday and the tune changes again... Yay! hes clearing all the weeds out! Brilliant stuff. Im flabbergasted, i really am, at the complacency of the expat community. Its one thing to stay neutral and not interfere and recognise that ultimately youre a guest in this country. Its quite another to actively cheer on the usurpation of power and the arbitrary detention of Thai citizens who have done nothing wrong. Well, we'll see if youre all posting stupid videos like 'nowhere to run' in a few weeks time. Resistance is inutil. Popular Post Tony125
Seems like people don't seem to remember Pol Pot who rounded up anyone he thought was a threat or could oppose him All academics werw considered a danger to him. If you spoke a second language or wore glasses meant you were intelligent could read so might inspire others to oppose him , they were done away with "The imposition of a totalitarian governmentregime always leaves its leaders afraid: afraid of losing power, failing to prevent vengeance, and facing betrayal by ambitious rivals. Military juntas rule with an iron fist. Look how backwards undeveloped Burma was untill resently when the junta opened up to elections, Thailand is going backwards instead of forward now.

Stupid reaction too.. schoolground stuff.. they did it too so its not bad Are we Dutch such a trusting people? “According to research by the European Commission, we have quite a lot of faith in the Dutch government. Although not as high as in Sweden and Denmark, where 37 percent and 22 percent feel that corruption is a big problem in their country. Only 51 percent of the Dutch consider corruption to be a problem.” I guess if "only" 51% the population is worried about corruption then they must be wrong and the 49% that don't care or aren't worried must be right. http://www.eur.nl/english/news/the_issue/issuearchive/2012/kwestie_2012_48/

And they also try to make sure both sides aren't corrupt at all, instead of leaving it to one corrupt side to point out the other sides greater corrupt nature.Supporting Suthep to overthrow corruption in general is an absolute absurdity. Suthep is a means to an end, I don't support him and if he can be proven to be corrupt take his ill gotten gains and put him in jail. I have no tolerance for corrupt government officials on either side. I hope and expect the general to put in place some tough anti corruption laws. But remember your side slashed the NACC budget (corruption fighters) by 60% and wanted to include 25.000 corruption cases in the amnesty. Kinda says it all. Who said I have a side. I am on democracy's side. Its taken a bit of a kicking the last few years. I don't expect to see it make a comeback in Thailand for quite a while. That's why I can't support Suthep and the army plan. It moves thailand further away from democracy than ever. Let's see if they can hold an election within 12 months. I doubt it.Suthep isn't a means to an end.
