How long can malaysian car stay in Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi,

Will be moving to Thailand in September. I have been advised by members on this site to apply for an Ed visa. This is what I will do.

Another question I have is about my Malaysian registered car. When I have visited Thailand previously for a holiday I just get the usual Carnet form which allows me to keep the car in Thailand for a month. I read somewhere you can get an extension for up to six months but not sure how easy that is. Is there any other way of keeping it longer than that without having to import it which would be very expensive. Could I just take it back to Malaysia again for the weekend and start the process again. I suppose they would get wise to this after one extension. Just wondered if anyone had done this before?

I know I will have to sell the car in Malaysia at some point and buy a car in Thailand just wondered.

Thanjs

Post in the motor forum plenty know about it there.

Just joined so still trying to navigate my way around the site. Checked through the different forums and only saw one that looked to be suitable which was the 'General" forum. Didn't realise a "motor" forum existed and don't know how to move it.

Thanks for letting me know Arthurwait,

Think i just moved it to the motor forum, thanks

I guess it it not allowed or many people would try to permanently use in Thailand cars temporally imported from other countries ?

It's certainly not allowed, although I have read about cars overstaying and they just had to pay a maximum of 20k Baht once it exited. I wouldn't like to take that chance, it says somewhere that they can take the car from you and charge you the full import duty on it.

Looks like I would have to sell it, I waited 8 months for the pick up to be delivered. Ford Ranger.

Would be good to hear if anyone has had their vehicle overstay.
