Possibility of the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190AR plane was shot down on the 25 Dec
It actually can, for 2 reason - had engine disintegrated and broke off the engine covers, damage would have been through the wings and into the fuselage right next to the wings. Pieces would also be larger and probably killed someone sitting next to the front of the engine. But... the damage is far the the back, at close to 90 degrees puncturing the skin, and in the video taken during the final moments, the engine on the damaged side looks intact, and there does not seem to be any injuries inside the plane nor punctured skin anywhere around the wings area. Damage to fuselage is in the back of the plane, a bit at the back of the wing, but main damage is just before vertical stabilizers and tail. For the damage to be done by engine, it would need to detach, and spray shrapnel into the tail while parallel to the aircraft. That didn't happen and videos show engine firmly attached and undamaged moments before plane hit the ground. Good theory, though, and probably one of the first ones considered in investigation. -
