Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said his ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) still retained an " open door" for negotiations with the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) over a 10-month post-election dispute, the country's state-run TV reported Saturday.
"The CPP continues to open its door for talks with the opposition in order to find a political solution in the spirit of national unity and unification by respecting the principles of democracy and laws," the National Television of Cambodia reported, quoting the prime minister as telling King Norodom Sihamoni on Friday.
Hun Sen led his cabinet members to meet the King on Friday at the capital's Royal Palace to brief him on the achievements the country had made last year.
Meanwhile, he also reiterated the government's firm commitment to protect the monarchy.
His remarks came after CNRP's President Sam Rainsy renewed his call last week for negotiations with the CPP over the post-poll dispute.
"Only talks between the two parties will lead to the end of the current political dispute," Sam Rainsy told a news conference last week. "The CNRP wants to find a peaceful solution to the dispute and to ensure that the next elections will be free and fair."
Cambodia remains trapped in a political row after the election results in July last year showed that the ruling CPP won 68 parliamentary seats and the opposition CNRP got the remaining 55.
The opposition has refused to accept the election outcome, which it says was marred by fraud, and it has boycotted parliament to demand an early election.
Hun Sen and Sam Rainsy had met three times in an attempt to resolve the dispute, but their talks produced no fruitful results. Their last contact was a telephone conversation in April. (Cihan/Xinhua)
