Krabi tourism body concerned over gas plant maintenance amid fears of blackout

KRABI, 10 June 2014 (NNT) – The Krabi Tourism Association has expressed concern over the planned repair of the Thailand-Malaysia Joint Development Area (JDA) A18 block and its impact on the province’s power usage.

The Chana power plant in Songkhla province, which receives natural gas from the Thailand-Malaysia JDA will be closed for 28 days starting Friday for major maintenance at natural gas fields in the Thailand-Malaysia JDA.

The scheduled maintenance has raised fear of another power blackout in the region. The association is worried that any disruption to the province’s electricity supply will further damage its tourism, which is already hard hit from the political situation.

The association has nonetheless said it is confident that the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will outline measures to prevent a power outage from happening. Locals have been urged to use electricity sparingly ahead of the planned JDA shutdown.

In 2012, resort islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan experienced a major blackout that lasted three days, prompting thousands of peak-season tourists to leave.
