Canvases for paintings in CR?

Featured Replies

I want to know where these sell in CM.

I'm talking about gallery wrap canvases where the cancvas wraps round the frame and is stapled on the back.

No wooden frame required just the stretched canvas.

I know they're for sale in town but these are brands and cost about twice as much as from a maker.

There are several shops in CM and they usually have stock of different sizes, all primed white.

Thanks!

I am a little confused. Are you asking Chiang Rai residents where to buy in Chiang Mai, or is that just a typo? It also sounds like you already know where the shops are but perhaps want to buy direct from a factory?

I think he is saying, are their places in CR like CM.

Yes, that's what I thought, else I would have moved to CM forum.

Hi

Just would like to know about makers/shops in CR, I don't want to buy standard sizes at double prices and I sometimes like extra deep frames.

Though there is a renowned art community here in Chiang Rai, I am not sure if any of them are active on this forum. I would suspect your fellow artists would have a better idea about where to source material. Art galleries and framers should have some ideas as well.

D'oh! And you can get paint at the paint store!

Thankyou Ajarnsiam

Is Tepawan actually making up canvases or selling factory made ones?

I'm after the local jobs.

In fact bought three today in CM but need in CR sometime soon.

They sell rolls of canvas if you want to stretch, mount and prime it yourself, so I'm assuming they make up the mounted canvas themselves, cheers.

If you haven't already done so you could check out the Bridge Art gallery, which is the main hub of the CR artworld. It's few kilos out of town on the the Mae Sai road, left hand side going north. I'm sure they must have a web presence with contact details.

Bridge Gallery?

Ah is that the new place left side before airport which has excellent soup?

I occasionally escape wife's family food there with a takeaway.

I've actually done and dusted two paintings in CM the last few days and am intending to rip my way through canvasses fast.

Yes, sorry Art Bridge, spot of dyslexia, they have a charity exhibition for earthquake "victims" next month I think, with artists donating paintings; a couple of friends have done so and I'm getting this 2nd hand through them. I believe it's a raffle type of event, tickets set at 50,000 baht, which I imagine will put it out of the reach of the few remaining regulars on this forum sadly.

The upside carrot is that you might win a painting worth millions of baht from a major Thai artist. And of course it's all in a good cause.

I'm afraid I find the general run of taste in rather bold rather than subtle colours very different in Thai than Farang and don't find most attractive.

Happily there we some excellent exceptions.

Chicken soup definitely tasteful.

(Also trying to figure out the difference between Chinese taste....which can tend to the vulgar.....to

Japanese, whcih I find utterly exquisite. Of course this is only through my eyes which are merely creatures of habit).

Just catching up on a few posts here: I had got the impression you were an aspiring artist of some sort, otherwise I wouldn't have spent my time to advise you where to buy canvas. I hope the advice was useful.

So sorry you don't approve of Chinese or Thai art, but I'm sure the Japanese will be very grateful to know that you consider their art to be exquisite lol.

Sorry if I didn't answer properly Ajarnsiam

Yes i shall be spending more time in CR and yes would like to do my own paintings.

Think I know the shop you mean in the street north of the big clock tower.

I happen to be up there right now and will take another peek.

In CM I tend to buy at canvas framing shops which seem to cater to students, quite good is you get them to make the tucking in and trimming in the back a bit tidier than normal.
