Need Help with Last Name Please

Featured Replies

My grandma is from Thailand. I asked her what her last name is and means and she said something like Swyngam and she says her name means beautiful color. I was wondering what is the most accurate way to write her name in English. I saw online that swyngam only means beatiful also. So how do I spell the last name beautiful color in English please? The translator says its S̄ī thī̀ s̄wyngām but is that an accurate way to spell her last name? It sounds lounger than how she pronounces her name so it doesn't seem accurate to me.

See suu-I ?

Is this Thai or a regional dialect or Esarn language ?

สี see ที่ tee สวย suui งาม ngahm

It sounds like she is just saying suui ngahm. I was wondering if I am mysing something? I dont know the dialect. I assume Thai.

Can I spell it S̄īs̄wyngām? Will that be accurate?

If her last name is สวยงาม, which as you correct state simply means "beautiful" (no reference to colour), the official (Royal Thai) system would render it SUAYNGAM.

Can I spell it S̄īs̄wyngām? Will that be accurate?

That looks like the gibberish that Google Translate spews out. Virtually nobody would understand it or be able to pronounce it.

Well that sounds like what she is saying I am just confused why I do not hear her something that matches beautiful color like what she says her name means.

Maybe it is Suayngam it sounds right.

Thank you fir the information.

beautiful color = สีงาม = See-ngam, Sie-ngam ?

ศรีงาม = Sringam (Sri-ngam)

ศรี and สี same pronounce ( ศรี = a prefix, meaning majestic, glorious, often preceding proper names ) , สี = color

Ok that makes a little more sense thanks!

It's probably สีงาม which means beautiful or pretty color.

สี (see) = color

งาม (ngam) = pretty/beautiful

It's a common last name in rural Thailand.

Although ศรีงาม is pronounced the same as สีงาม, ศรี (sri) does not mean color.

I don't think it's สวยงาม because สวย (suay) doesn't mean color.
