Malaysian Pit Vipers

Just had my 4th encounter with one of these around my yard. Whilst I would like to be able to live and let live and gently usher these things away, I could not live with myself if any of my family members or my dog got bitten by one of these things that I had failed to deal with, and so whenever I find one I kill it.. From what I've read these are the deadliest snakes in Thailand (based on the number of people who die from their bites, not the toxicity of their venom) they are aggressive and they don't get out the way at the sound of your approaching footsteps. I've heard it said that snakes will only bite if they are hunting food or if they feel threatened. Well, I feel threatened with one of these anywhere near my family, so I don't lose any sleep at night over killing one.

I'm not advocating the killing of any snakes, nor am I recommending killing these snakes as the being correct course of action. If anyone encounters one of these it is up to that individual to decide what action to take. However, if you decide that you want to take it on then based on my experiences I can offer some advice that I would have liked to have heard before I tackled the first one I encountered and who knows, it may even save a life.... In my opinion the best tool for the job is a piece of garden hose around 4' long, used like a club. I've tried all sorts - sticks, pipes, garden shears, a bb gun,,, The piece of garden hose outperforms all of them. It allows you to keep your distance and when swung hard it flattens on contact with the ground giving you a much larger area of impact than if using a stick for example. Also, the adrenaline starts flowing a bit when you take one of these things on and sticks and pipes have a tendency to break during the battle.

No doubt I will be criticized for this post, and that's fine. Yes, I know the snakes were here first... and yes, I know it is us encroaching on their land... and yes, I know they are just doing what snakes do... Well, I am just doing what a protective father does. And at the same time I'm trying to help anyone who feels the same way i do about having lethal animals on the loose in the vicinity of their family. Sorry if that offends anyone.

One other thing, I have encountered a total of 6 snakes around my house and twice the snake disappeared somewhere whilst I was looking for a tool (one was a Malaysian pit viper). On both occasions the snakes reappeared around the house within the next few days...

Post a photo next time please...

I live on a small plantation and have yet to see a Malaysian Pit viper. See lots of other snakes, including cobras.

Not doubting you but identification can sometimes be difficult.

OK Carlos - here's a pic of the first one I found and the last one. I'm no expert but when I found the first one, true to their reputation, it made no attempt to try to get away and so I had plenty of time to Google it and see what I was dealing with... All signs seemed to point towards Malaysian pit viper but if I have got it wrong please let me know.

The 4 of these that I've come across have all been a similar size - around 60 cm long and relatively skinny. The one that is curled up was not much bigger than a mosquito coil...

Yup... Nail that sucker :)

Not a fan of snake killers, most of the time they are harmless but in this case.... Boom

All really useful information for a Pattaya thread

Jimmy stop being a poove. There are many 'wranglers' in Pattaya.

I had a very tiny one that looked like the one in the second picture in the pumphouse a few weeks ago, unfortunately it didn't survive my inspection.

It had a white belly, is that correct ?

It's a bit blurred but here's a pic of its belly - yes, it's kinda white/cream.

I recognized it from the arrow shaped head, bigger than the body.

I hope mum doesn't come look for her baby. w00t.gif

What area are you in? We have had a few snakes here in the Mabprachan area, but not so deadly, so just carried them away. A cobra or Pit viper, I would have to kill it. Like you said, family and pets are much more important. Just need the proper equipment to take care of them, before they appear. Also would be good to know where to go, in case of being bitten or pets being bitten.

I live around SSCC not quite as far down as Mabprachan - closer to Wanasin Market.

I think my dog must be either the luckiest dog on the planet or else he has some kind of 6th sense about these things. He's been sleeping within 6' of at least 2 of them and for some reason has apparently never woken up and gone over to give them a sniff. I read somewhere that amongst the animals that get bitten it is usually cattle that get bitten on the legs (from stepping too close to one) and dogs that get bitten on the face (from getting close and having a sniff).

I think I read on a post on TV that generally dogs can be treated with anti-venom if you react quickly enough but cats cannot. My first stop if mine was bitten would be NPW Animal Hospital. First stop if any humans were bitten would be BPH as I have read that they stock the anti-venom.

Maybe you didn't read my last three sentences? Why not make a list useful for all areas. So add to it. Also did you know you could call any one of the listed numbers and they just "might" give you the name and number of the closest rescue group near you? They do talk to each other. A little imagination might help get the problem solved.
