Hey,

My Fiance is due to give birth to our baby in 7 months, we have decided to go to her home town mahasarakham for the delivery and generally stay here for a while, just wondering what the best hospital is around this area?

Thanks in advance,

The provincial hospital in the ampur town.

It's crowded and the buildings aren't much to look at but the care is fine. You can pay a little extra and get a private room.

They will not, however, let you be in the delivery room. If that is important to you then you could see if any doctors at the sole private hospital in town ("Thai International Hospital Maha Sarakham", but the "international" part is hyperbole to say the least) will allow this. They also might not, it's not common in Thailand, but at a private hospital it's up to the doctor.

Need however to be wary of unnecessary c-section at private hospitals.

As a Thai, your fiance should be covered under the Universal Care Scheme so delivery would be essentially free at government hospital, but she if lives outside the ampur she might have to go to a district hospital to avail of that - under UCS people have to register at and utilize the hospital which covers the location where they live.

Good advice above. My 2 baht worth on the private hospital. Have been in there on several occasions. Last time a few months ago for my wife. I felt that their charges were a bit over the top. My opinion only.

Send me a P M if you want some more info, I have lived in Sarakham for the last 5 years

Hey, thanks for the replys, I think it will be the 'Thai International Hospital Maha Sarakham' if we do go to her home town for the delivery, from what I can see on the internet it looks quite basic however,

I am now kind of considering the bumrungrad and staying back in bangkok for the delivery, it is around 60,000Bhat which is not too bad for a top hospital I do not think, I was expecting it to be way more anyway

I have been at Maha Sarakham International Hospital severel times. I have even stayed the night there once. I araived at the hospital in an ambulance that time. And that was litle bit funny because the hospital was on the other side of the road from my old house. If you don't have an insurance the bill can be a little bit steep, but the service is impeccable.

Maha Sarakham University has a medical school, perhaps you should find out what hospital they use for teaching.

In terms of facilities the provincial hospital is best, but the private one has nicer rooms. If you prebook a private room in the public hospital you should get one (not expensive and did so for a relative few months ago)', but without pre-booking there are sometimes no rooms available. My son was born in the private hospital, since although I'm not a big fan of small private hospitals. I thought it would be okay for maternity, albeit the near ubiquitous C section (big baby, smallish mother). The Thai name is Suun Ruam Peet (excuse spelling). I'd say that the hospital is okay, but doesn't have too much in the way of high-tech facilities. At least it is very near the provincial hospital should a transfer be necessary. The two medics I had to pay both also held posts in the provincial hospital. There was a minor complication with an abnormal test result and I had to get an opinion from a paediatrician (the 2nd doctor involved). Luckily there was no problem. Apart from the standard private rooms there are quite nice suites, where the husband can stay overnight. It wasn't cheap, but I got a big discount.
