A few weeks ago 2 huge speed bumps were installed . One in front of 7-11 and another by the Handicapped School.

They are at least 3 meters long. Actually should be called a mound.

Now they are tearing up those mounds causing traffic problems again.

Anyone knowing the reason they were placed and the reason they are being taken out. This would be most appreciated.

Please skip the Thai jokes, any real information would be terrific. Thanking you in advance.

Yeah, they were a PITA to drive over...maybe Thailand's bid to become a speed-bump hub.

My guess is that as with the handicapped lane that has been added to the length of that soi, which is ignored by most drivers and parkers, it was probably to slow down traffic there for the benefit of the wheelchair bound and other handicapped people (blind, deaf, crippled) from the various Father Ray charities on that soi, who use the soi to traverse from their schools and lodgings to Big C and other points on Pattaya Klang.

A fellow pointed out today that quite a few cars were damaged as they were unaware of the speed bumps.

Apparently the removal of said speed bumps is due to the complaints.

Wasn't this the same reason they carried out a similar exercise regarding the speed bumps along Beach Road, particularly the one in front of the police station which they also dug up almost immediately after they had finished them.

At this rate, it makes me think they should put in a bit more thought into designing and building it in the first place? It would be considerably cheaper.rolleyes.gif

However, they do most definitely need something to slow the traffic down regarding some maniacs on motorbikes in particular. If it is true that they had been removed due to complaints by motorists, I wonder if they will ever listen to the complaints of those unfortunate people in wheelchairs when they need to pull out into this sometimes crazy traffic because they find some inconsiderate b**tard has parked their vehicle right over the supposed designated wheelchair lane.bah.gif

I remember Soi Yume maybe 5 years ago before it got all paved over and now has traffic. My friend always stayed at the Nana hotel down the street there and i used to go that outdoor place that had a decent outdoor pool you could rent a chair at for the day. Yume was a quiet peaceful street. I enjoyed sitting outdoors and chatting with some of the ladies that worked in the Finnish owned restaurant. Last year, I stayed at the Rattakit, that pink hotel close to Second road and Big C. Yume is very busy now.

They completely screwed up the design and building of those speed bumps. They had quite a big lip and then a high pitch. Never seen anything quite so stupidly built. The humps on Beach I think are quite reasonable. Don't know why they didn't copy those. It looks like they might replace the speed mountains with something less crazy.

They are so "reasonable" that in fact they are useless. sad.png

Many vehicles don't need to slow down even a little bit to cross them...

The one that had been ripped up nearest the handicapped entrance going towards Big C was concreted over today but lower and with a slightly more gently sloping bump. There were rolls of "rebar" left near it so I wasn't sure if they were going to make it higher or if that was left for the other side when they get round to it.

Thailand is the hub of half arsed jobs. The wheelchair lane, or however you want to call it, is a nice and good idea but completely useless if the traffic law isn't enforced. In fact it makes it more dangerous for the handicapped.

For the speed-bumps, the problem here in Thailand is that they install a speed bump but don't care to install warning signs.

Lucky they are not the same as in soi Day and night, because you need a ladder to get over those.

While I think there are no build standards for speed bumps (or anything else), I'm guessing some soi locals install their own speed bumps. A few months ago, soi Xzyte suddenly had two new bumps (six in total now) that were built with a steep high peak. The bumps were installed right beside a newish roadside Thai whisky/moto taxi bar. Be careful.
