Any recommendations for a good computer tech/electronics troubleshooter?

Featured Replies

I have a high end ecu for a car, and my mechanic says that when he hooks it up to a laptop, sometimes it does not connect/link, which tells me there is some sort of short or internal problem. Does anyone know of a good computer repairman that can look at the motherboard inside and see/find the problem?

Nick; the owner of PRO-CORNER Computer repair on the 3rd floor of Fortune Tower is an excellent technician and speaks fluent English.

I've recommended him many times and have never had any negative feedback.

I don't quite understand. You have a tunable ECU for your car's fuel injection? The mechanic's laptop won't connect to it so he can program the ECU?

Immediately you want a computer technician to look at the mobo in the ECU? I don't think a computer technician will be able to troubleshoot an ECU but you can ask.

Ideally you'd want to have other techs try to connect their laptops to see if it's only your mechanic's laptop, or if it's the ECU. If it is the ECU it isn't necessarily the mobo. It could be the port (plug-in) or any of a number of things.

Very few techs can diagnose and repair a mobo, even in a PC. They are typically throw away or send back to the factory under warranty. It's hard enough to diagnose and be certain the problem is the mobo.

I think this is a job for your mechanic. He should try a different laptop, visually inspect the port and wiring, and then if he can't figure it out but knows it's the ECU, send it back to the factory or replace it.

There's a clue in the OP, 'sometimes'.

Could be the PC, the cable, or something internal to the ECU.

Two are easy to check, before opening up the ECU you need to ensure it's not one of the easy ones.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Here is an idea, have you tried another mechanic or another dealer repair shop?

jus to make sure where the problem lies.....

Tuner is going to give it a look and try to find out what's the problem. ECU is out of warranty, and I really don't want to spend 60K if problem can be diagnosed and fixed. Thanks dddave for the recommendation.

Forgot to mention in OP, mechanic has the same ECU and with his ECU there isn't a problem, so this is why I'm looking for someone to check.

OK, you went straight for the motherboard. It could be a lot of other things. It could be a bad connection going the diagnostic port or a lot of things.

I don't believe that a PC repair person would have a clue what to check on it. They are into PC software and hardware. If it's PC hardware it gets replaced, but the diagnostic thinking and tests and cabling and process of elimination is totally different.

If it hooks up sometimes, can he just catch one of those times and tune it and forget it? Otherwise I can't think of what to do other than sending it back to the factory.
