Ministry of Interior campaigning against liquor presence on temple grounds

The Ministry of Interior in cooperation with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) are pushing for the removal of all alcoholic beverages from temple grounds.

Air Marshal Kongsak Wantana (คงศักดิ์ วันทนา), the minister of the interior, following discussions with Prof. Dr. Udomsin Srisangnam (อุดมศิลป์ ศรีแสงนาม), deputy chairman of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, stated that on the meritorious occasion of His Majesty's 60th ascension anniversary, and on the occasion that next year will mark His Majesty's 80th year of age, the ministry of interior is campaigning for every province to remove alcoholic beverages from temple grounds.

Air Marshal Kongsak added that the governors of each province will be assigned the task of carrying out this initiative with the support of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation.

The air marshal added that cultural and elderly affairs will also be overseen by the foundation and the government.

I didn't realise they had an alcohol problem in the temples with the monks consuming too much.

But perhaps the lifestyle is hard for some to handle,so they imbibe a little.

Plus,the local Wat is always the venue for a big party and latge amounts of amber nectar are consumed there.

In Europe, monks and certain monasteries have been responsible for beer and wine production for a thousand years. Some of these products are highly regarded in today's market.

Perhaps some Thai monks should start a brewery,but since the 5th precept says we should abstain from alcohol, that might be difficult.. :o
