I have lived here 8 years and have met some decent people who have become friends , I have also met a good few miserable expats either whining about the heat , the food the traffic the way their wife/gf treats them gets boring , why do men retire here and lose themselves , screaming about a beer is 5 baht more.

Is why many retirees turn to alcohol and television to keep themselves entertained and fit into something.

I think this is the first time this topic has ever been raised on the forum. It will be a massive hit. Cant wait to read 20 pages of misery.

Because life happened here just as it did from where they came from. Many just go through the motions of despair everyday because not doing so is much too difficult. Tomorrow maybe...

Who we choose as friends is up to us. I tend to pick people who are positive, fun, and accomplished in life. Plenty of those around. Avoid the grumps and the lowlifes.

The magnitude of the whinging is directly correlated to the length of their arms and the depth of their pockets. And yeah, Poms are the worst. Mind you, living on a meagre frozen pension with £2 3/6 reserve in the bank can't be a bundle of fun. That extra 5 baht on a bottle of Chang could lead to eventual starvation.

I don't think Shakespeare meant to warn anybody when he made Macbeth say this. Overall, his works are pretty nuanced, he showcased the human condition in all its complexity, light and dark.

Ha ha, I've been discussing this subject for decades.

You can blame the vloggers, people like Dan about Thailand.
These vloggers are always promoting Thailand as cheap, inexpensive etc, this encourages all the cheap Charlie's to relocate to Thailand. Then once these guys settle, they find their pennies aren't going asy far as the vloggers tell them, now they haven't got the funds to live a happy life. They come out here on their aged pension, buy themselves a disability scooter, ride up and down the local soi's, here in Pattaya it's soi Buakhou, racing into the 7-Eleven, buying their Chang beers and LM's, then they're off at speed on the roads annoying other road users.

These people live in a little 30m² room, living a miserable life.

If you get a chance, have a meal in one of the Cheap Charlie restaurants, the joint is wall to wall miserable expats. The poor waitresses, getting abused daily 🙁

Macbeth offers one lens under which things can be seen. Other works of his offer another lens, which is what makes him (or more precisely, them, as it is likely that several authors wrote under the name Shakespeare) so interesting. The Tempest, for example, is on the other end of the spectrum.

It seems you're missing a few points here. Those who choose to live here, and not tourists, which you seem to always complain about, need to have a certain amount of money, so they aren't cheap but more well off than the majority of locals who live here. That you continually , like now, lump all foreigners into one pool is why you made this statement, although an incorrect one.

Another thing is that you don't live here but come back occasionally from your work on the ocean, so, being a tourist yourself, you really don't know how the majority here lives, but only what you see while in Pattaya.

Assumptions are what a few here do, and they are always wrong, as it takes evidence over time before you can judge others, and even then you really don't know many people well, and that evidence is what those who assume don't have.

Many living the nightmare, best to go home or try somewhere else

Whether I'm working offshore (at the most away for 4 weeks) or not, Thailand has been my home since 2002, I'm well aware of what goes on here.
