Great Value New Restaurant

The Nest Restaurant was reviewed on TV approximately 2 years ago but I can’t locate the page now. The Thai chef who was running the restaurant for the past year or so has moved to new larger premises just down the road from The Nest.

The new restaurant is called My Kitchen. It is quite large as it comfortably seats up to 40 people and is very comfortable inside as it is very clean and has air conditioning. WiFi is available and there are 2 large TV’s. Street parking is easy to find because it is in such a quiet area. All this and the food is still delicious and very, very reasonably priced.

The menu has lots of western food as well as Thai food. The manager is very friendly and speaks English very well.

The only draw back is that the restaurant is a little difficult to find.

To get to the restaurant follow Hang Dong road south past Lotus until you get to the Shell Service Station. Immediately after Shell take the soi on the left. About 200 meters down the soi cross over the small canal and then follow the canal, with the canal on your left. Follow this road for about 1 km till you see a market area on your right. Keep going past the market area and take the first street on the right. The restaurant is about 40 m down this soi on your right.

The Google Map coordinates of the restaurant are 18.751139, 98.977889 or 18°45'04.1"N 98°58'40.4"E

Is it open for lunch and dinner ?

Are there any days when it's closed ?

I think it is closed on Thursday. I'm not sure about the hours but will find out for you in a few days when I go back to the restaurant.

I'm glad to see a positive review for this restaurant which is one of those "small soi treasures" of which there are so many.

Both my Thai wife and I have eaten at The Nest and on every occasion the food (Thai and Farang) has been excellent with fresh vegetables and other produce, a hard-working chef and customer-friendly owner who speaks very good English.

The directions are excellent and it's well worth doing a little exploring to find it and yes it's closed on Thursdays. My feelings are that you won't be disappointed!

My Kitchen is open from 8 am to 8 pm. It has an extensive menu including breakfast, Italian cheese type and Mexican dishes and some Western and Thai food. The closing time of 8 pm is flexible as the owner/chef lives on the premises so that if there is a group that wants to patronize the restaurant after 8 they will be catered for.

At the moment the restaurant is open 7 days but after it becomes established it will be closed one day per week (yet to be decided which day).

Are those really pictures of the food from your restaurant? If so, looks like the real deal for Western food. thumbsup.gif

It's not my restaurant. I have no commercial interest in the restaurant. I want to see the Thai owner/chef succeed because the food is delicious and great value.

The photos are taken from the menu. I have only tried a few dishes but the ones I have tried have all been great.

Oh sorry. I guess the "My Kitchen" name confused me. Anyway, if those are really pictures of the restaurant food, it looks promising.

I did have a Thai dish there yesterday, Gai Met Mamuang or Cashew Chicken. I did take a photo with my camera phone. Btw the price of the dish is 50 Baht. If you prefer drinking water, like I do, the cost of the meal is still 50 Baht because water plus ice is free.

I will ask the owner if the menu pictures are actual photos of the food he cooked.

Well kept secret. Is there no sign on Hang Dong Rd ? Hideaway Cafe, one of our favourites, is also unknown by many but at least they have  a small sign on the cnr of their soi and HD Road. Will give it a try.

It is great value.  Visited today for lunch and you would be hard pressed to find better value than here for the type of food on offer.   It does not have the same ambiance as 'The Hideaway' and the menu is nowhere near as extensive but if you want good solid Western or Thai food at very decent prices you will not be disappointed.   The place is still fairly new, the furniture likewise and clean, two wall mounted TV's for those who want them, wall fans, aircon for when needed and a friendly welcome from the gaffer and his staff.  I could have chosen any of the Western meals and been happy and the wife, who normally goes for Thai food, decided she would have good old Fish & Chips.  As a third, side order, we had four Sausage Patties which i wanted to try as my Mother used to make them a lot when i was a kid and serve them with buttery mashed potato and baked beans. They were just like Mum made and i was very surprised because it's not easy to even find pork sausage meat in Thailand let alone sausage patties.  I asked the gaffer where he sourced his sausage meat and he said he makes it himself.

This Guy deserves support as he has put time and effort into travel and his cooking experience to come up with things that suit our Western fancies. In short he knows what we like and wants to deliver at very reasonable cost.  Highly recommended.

FYI...Total bill for three main courses.......294 Baht.

"It has an extensive menu"

Sign of a mediocre chef and kitchen.  But for a cheap eatery looks good.

"sign of a mediocre chef and kitchen" so I assume you have eaten there then whistling.gif

Yaaaaaawn.  I just went to a Thai place and had pad see ew, moo with a cup of soup on the side, and some of the best peppers in fish sauce around.  It was so busy I had to share a table with three young ladies from CMU.  30 THB......

Was the Thai place air conditioned and did you have the option of ordering Farang food? Could you read the Bangkok Post or connect to the internet with free WiFi?

If you eat Thai food exclusively there are hundreds of places where you can get cheap Thai food. My reaction to the 30 Baht exclusively Thai food places is similar to yours. Yaaaaawn!

"sign of a mediocre chef and kitchen" so I assume you have eaten there then"

No my point was the quote of an extensive menu. Having a complicated menu has several problems. 1.that it is hard to time dishes so that everyone's meal comes at the same time. 2. It creates more waste and spoilage having so many options. Things tend to sit around for a longer amounts of time. 3. It is difficult for a chef to maintain a high standard for each recipe when there are so many variables. 4. Meals are usually pre prepped and sit around for longer amounts of time and would not pass most health codes.

But as stated above the picture of the food looks good and for a relatively low cost it does meet the value statement of the OP. Value is not what I look for when eating though especially if I am to go out of my way.

As I haven't ever been to the restaurant in question so I won't comment on it but I would like to contribute to this side discussion.

My biggest complaint with a large varied menu, unless one has a very large staff and customer turnover such as a Las Vegas casino buffet (not that I think they do it that good of a job putting out exceptional food but then again that's not their client base), is it is very hard to do many different things good. Having the skill level in many different cuisines and a kitchen equipped to properly execute them is rare. Not that many great French/Thai/Mexican/Contiental restaurant out there in my opinion. As for the timing of the meal mentioned above is a bit of a mute point here, as is the healthy code comment, as two exactly the same fried rice dishes can come out to a table of two at different times (I've seen a staff member make one and serve it and then go back and make the other). I do agree a menu should use a particular product in a few dishes at least and this is difficult when offering dishes form different parts of the world. Zeichen made some good points and understands why a huge menu is not particularly a good thing.

Again no reflexion on The Nest Restaurant , a poster it mentioned that there was "two wall mounted TVs for those who want them". I personally don't, nor do I like it when my dining companions stare at their smart phones. Just the sound of a tv show is distracting unlike if they played music at a conversation possible level. This is especially a concern of mine as I dine with my children and though they have been taught not to watch during meals, which is much easier at home as it's off, it's hard and not as enjoyable for them to resist . I remember when tvs were for bars and perhaps sport themed restaurants. I know I don't have to go to places where they have TV's, which is becoming more the exception then the rule, but what about those who don't want them as often it is not a choice as worded in the sentence I quoted above. .

"Extensive" is a somewhat subjective label.  We've been there twice now and I wouldn't say the menu is overly long or ambitious - not even a quarter of Gecko Garden's, for example.  Seems like down to earth, good value food with no pretensions.   Lunch for two (three dishes and a soda) was under 150 baht.  Pancakes were rather disappointing, though.

Well, I am sure from the reviews that the food is of decent quality and at a reasonable price--but, we took the trouble to find this place yesterday, Monday, and it was closed--not a brilliant way to capaitalise on all this new found free advertising.

Incidentally--the directions given at the beginning of this thread, I believe by the OP, were not in my opinion the easiest way to find the place--it's quite simple from the 'Somphot Chiang mai 700 Pi Road'--the one from Big C hang Dong to San Kamphaeng.

We will try again when we get the time.

My Kitchen Restaurant is open from 8 am to 8 pm and is closed on Thursdays.

The owner had to close the restaurant a couple of half days because his mother was involved in a fairly serious motor cycle accident.

If you want to check whether the restaurant is open or make a phone order, the mobile number is 081-602-7100

I tried the directions given in the post above. If you are coming from the south of Big C, Hang Dong I agree that is a much better way than the original directions.
