Acting Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said yesterday that Thailand would eventually resume talks with Cambodia regarding the International Court of Justice’s decision last November that clarified Cambodian sovereignty over the promontory on which the Preah Vihear temple sits.

But Sihasak admitted that the Thai political situation would need to be stabilised first.

“I would like to confirm that Thailand will prepare to cooperate using our existing mechanisms in order to [discuss] the ICJ’s verdict, but under the current situation in Thailand, the National Council for Peace and Order is working to ensure public order,” he said, following a meeting with Foreign Minister Hor Namhong yesterday.

“We will continue negotiations after we set up a new parliament and government.”

Namhong agreed that Cambodians would have to remain patient.

“We understand the turmoil in Thailand and the [situation] in Thailand, and we are waiting,” he told reporters.
