Baby Born! My Name in Thai

Hi Everyone,

My Son has been Born in Korat and the Wife is having trouble Registering his Birth as they need my Full Name in Thai

Full Name is: Shaun Wilfred de Burgh

However I have no Idea how to convert that Name to Thai

and she is scared she will get it wrong if she Converts the Name!

Can anyone give us a Hand? or a Link to someone who can help with this Translation?

If you are married, you got a affirmation letter form your embassy and had that one translated. Tht included your name. Use that translation for the birth certificate.

Your name is also in Thai on your work permit, if you have one.

Not Married YET. We were planning to Marry but I only have a Single Week off Work to get the Birth Certificate sorted and Translated, Citizenship by Decent Lodged and her Visa Lodged (Australia)

Mate, we've just done our boys Citizenship by Descent.

To be honest, I think that to get "the Birth Certificate sorted and Translated, Citizenship by Decent Lodged and her Visa Lodged (Australia)" is a tight timeline, that is presuming that you wait for the Citizenship papers before lodging her (assuming) Partner Visa application.

Appartently Partner Visas can be done 'on-line' but I'm yet to read a report of someone who has done that ... it's a new concept.

We lodged my Partners Visa back in April ... I haven't got around to writing that guide yet as we aren't past that crutial 4 month phase yet.

Congratulations on the birth of your son!

Make certain that your name is spelled in Thai correctly. Think about it like this; at this point you don't know your name.

I used my name as spelled on our wedding certificate. I imagine your embassy should be able to expedite a quick translation of your name. Just make sure to get your name spelled correctly in Thai, as you will be using it a lot for years to come. Having more than one spelling, or incorrect spelling, of your name can be a big headache down the road.

I'm sure some other TV-Australians will be able to guide you along with other specific tips. I'm also not sure what you need to do to legalize your parenthood of the child since you are not married. Hopefully someone will point you that way also.

Are you in Korat the city? I am sure a place that size has a fair few 'authorised' translation services.

Maybe do an urgent squawk on the Issan sub-forum? They are sleepy buggers up there and you might catch them before they have had too many Leo's!

What I don't know is "How to Spell my Name in Thai"

Anyone know where I can get this Done? Translated?

What we did was a slightly different process.

We worked what names we wanted for the boys.

Western first names and they took my Western Family name.

We gave them Thai middle names based on the day of the week they were born.

So, we then added my birthplace etc in English and went to a translation place ... got them to translate all that into Thai ... Bt200 or 300.

We then gave that information to the Hospital in Thai ... they arn't going to argue with an 'Official Translation'.

Then we went back to the same translation service and got them to translate the boys Birth Certificates back into English ... plus we gave them back their first official translation just so they couldn't get it wrong.

For the little bit extra money, we felt it was well worth while because there could be no mistakes!

When the Agency did the translation of the Birth Certificate from Thai into English, I hit them up for copies.

Essentially it's on the word processer. Bt 200 each they wanted, I haggled down to Bt 100 ... but we had twins.

Those english Birth Certificates are gold in Australia and difficult to replace.

If you are using the VFS service, just make a photocopy, show them original but don't give ... should be sweet.

Also, don't forget the 'Blue Book' from the home registered in.

From memory, if the Amphur that the birth Hospital is in is different to the one where the home is ... you go to the Hospital Amphur ... just confirm that.

A squillion other tips, but you read the guide, so that's a good start.
