Central bank declares August 11 extra holiday

Central-bank-declares-August-11-extra-ho

BANGKOK: -- The Bank of Thailand today announced Monday August 11 an extra holiday for financial institutions.

The extra holiday announced on a special basis is aimed at supporting the policy of the National Council for Peace and Order to promote tourism and stimulate economic growth, it said.

The central bank said the announcement of the extra holiday in advance will enable the private sector to adjust itself and will not affect the country’s monetary and economic systems.

It said although the extra holiday will be a public holiday, commercial banks can still open their branch offices at some department stores to service customers on that day same as at weekends, with regard to giving adequate care to their staff working on that extra holiday.

BoT announces August 11 as Bank Holiday
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, July 8 -- The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has moved to make August 11 as an additional Bank Holiday this year, in line with the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)'s resolution announcing August 11 as an added national holiday.

The NCPO's aim of making August 11, one day before the National Mother's Day Holiday as an extra day off nationwide, is to encourage more family time and stimulate domestic spending and tourism.

The extra holiday would combine with the adjacent days to make a long weekend from August 9-12.

The BoT has, in line with the NCPO idea, announced August 11 as another Bank Holiday for 2014.

Although August 11 is now considered a national holiday, financial institutions still reserve the right to keep some branches open, such as those located within shopping malls and department stores, to continue to provide services to the public.

The Bank of Thailand emphasized that bank employees should be paid appropriately for their overtime working hours. (MCOT online news)

Great idea, let's promote tourism by potentially closing the places you may need to go to get money.

If you are heading for the beach, the mountains, national parks etc just hope there's a shopping mall handy.

Do the Banks even relise how much revenue the country looses when the country almost comes to a standstill for one day? Have they even considered the death toll on our roads due to people rushing to go home and coming back? Haven’t we lost enough already due to the political turmoil a few months ago?

"realize" and "consider" require the use of the brain and "thinking" . . . which is not something that is generally thought of as popular here in Thailand.

Another out of context report.

A few days ago the NCPO announced that in order to create a one off long weekend incorporating HM Queen Sririkit's birthday on 12 August 2014 which, this year falls on a Tuesday, they have declared Monday 11 August 2014 to be a Public Holiday. The Queen's birth day is a PH in Thailand not International Mother's Day.

The BoT is simply declaring it Bank Holiday in-line with bank holidays alighed with many other PHs.

My concern is the potential for another mass exodus from the city resulting in more carnage on the roads.
