Australian tourist for Thai father in law.

Recommended Posts

My Thai wife, now a permanent resident will be sponsoring her father to come to Australia for holiday. Him using form 1418 and her using form 1149. Does anyone have experience this. I'm wondering how strong a case we need. Eg translated and certified copies of land ownership to Indicate he will return and proof of funds ? I just don't want to put a ridiculous amount of effort into something that may by given comparatively easy.

It's basically the same application as a normal tourist visa.

The only real difference being that DIAC can ask for a bond.

A bit more info about him like age, first time visit, other family back in Thailand?

To be honest, I wouldn't bother with certified copies of land ownership etc.

Fund shouldn't be a problem as I assume you guys will be bankrolling the trip.

Thanks Will.

He is 54 I think, we will have to get a certified copy of his passport, (never used, just got it) and a photo sent over.

I have worked out that we will also have to lodge form 956.

The application asks for few questions that require guess work like all his siblings names and date of birth.

I wonder how much funds will be necessary to have in his bank will $1000 do?

The fact that his son and daughter grandson and wife(not official wife) will be staying in Thailand is about the only other evidence I can come up with that he will be returning to back home.

And where would I record this? On the last page for additional information?

Because of his age and circumstances, I think that probably just saying something along the lines

of "wants to visit family in Australia, has extended Thai family in Thailand etc" should suffice.

If he has any grandchildren in Australia, you could always mention that for the visit as well.

Does he work, how does he earn a living?

You could either put it on the additional info page or on a separate note.

It doesn't really matter.

As far as funds go, he doesn't really have to have any money in the bank as long as you advise that

you're paying for everything.

Thanks Will

Father in Law isn't employed by anybody.

His other daughter will take him to copy his passport and get a passport photo.

where in BKK does he get a certified copy of his passport done?

and hopefully that will be all

Thanks again David

Its extrordinary how hard it seems to get a certified copy that is valid for Australia done in Thailand.

I didn't get a satisfactory anwer on the phone from DIBP /DIAC /IMMI. I know thats a numbers game, you just have to ring back untill you get a competent person.

But the best solution I can think of is to have him post his passport here and I will take it down to the local cop shop and get a copy certified.

As I was going over to escort him here i'll just bring it with me.

The three signature required can be printed out by sister in law and he can sign them and send them with his passprt an photo.

It seems the easies solution.

Now to find out the best post service, DHL or otherwise?

Mate, I hear you re the 'Certified Copy' ... but do you have confirmation that the local Cop Shop will cut it with the Embassy?

We are an hour outside of Bangkok, so can easily go in there.

Must be difficult in your situation.

Hey David I didnt say that I am in Australia, so certifying a copy is dead easy cop shop, pharmacicts, etc.

And we then lodge it here in Australia.

The difficulty is getting the things done in Thaikand with me and my wife here in Australia.

As my fatrher is not competant with technology such as email and photo copiers, we waited till my wife sister was in town(BKK) to do for him.

And now she says everything is closed for 4 days for candle thing.
