Department of Employment warns of fraudulent fruit picking jobs in Sweden and Finland

BANGKOK, 13 July 2014 (NNT) – Workers are warned of fraudulent fruit picking jobs in Sweden and Finland while the Department of Employment insists that this year’s legitimate quotas are full, at about 5.9 thousand visas.

The Director General of the Employment Department said this year’s quotas have been approved by both Sweden and Finland with 5,924 visas granted.

The Thai Embassy in the two countries will collect workers' data in order to monitor the well being of the Thais and provide any aid required by the approved workers while they’re employed abroad.

This Thai blueberry picker sad story has been around in Thai news for years. The Thai workers always later claim they were swindled or not paid in later news. There are generally two stories in Thai news about this blueberry picking in Scandinavia. One is to celebrate the fact that Thais can get work over seas as fruit pickers. The follow up news is always about Thais getting screwed in some way.

Right, so Cambodians and Burmese are in Thailand, and they work as cheap labour.
And Thais go to Sweden and Finland, are Thais more hard working and cheaper than people in Sweden and Finland ?

Maybe Sweden and Finland should go straight to Cambodia, and give work permits to Cambodians. After all, the Cambodians are cheaper than the Thais. OR, Sweden and Finland don't allow people from outside the European Union to come in, only allow people from the poorer areas of the European Union to go to Sweden and Finland.

If you're going to let in non-European Union labourers, why have Thais and NOT have Cambodians ??
