Rumored ED Visa Extension Change

Featured Replies

I heard from someone in Thai class today that an immigration officer told him that you can no longer get a 1 year extension on your visa for a second year of language study. The change is supposed to happen on August 12th. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Means u have to go to immigration every 90 days?

Where did you get a one year extension before?

In most places it is already 90 days and others 180 days for attending a language school.

So I've already done close to a year of language study with a 90 day and then a 180 extension. I am talking about the second year of language study for which you can usually get a year extension without having to leave the country (with 90 reporting).

all this week and next week immigration will visit languages schools everyday to check who is attending and who is not in Phuket

a lot of russian and koreans going to lose their ED visa...

My friend just got 1 year extension for 2nd year in samui

all this week and next week immigration will visit languages schools everyday to check who is attending and who is not in Phuket

a lot of russian and koreans going to lose their ED visa...

After the first year there would not be a one year extension. You would just need to pay for another year of study and keep getting 180 days (I assume).

Right, but what it sounds like is that as of August 12th, you would essentially have to leave the country, go to an immigration office in a different country with your paperwork, and apply for a new Visa instead of getting an extension. I'm curious about if anyone else has heard anything about this or has heard anything different. I just heard about it today from a guy in my language class that just went to immigration. His got extended just fine but he said the officer mentioned changes happening on August 12th, which means anyone before then can get an extension and anyone going after then would have to leave the country and get a new Visa.

He also mentioned that the officer told him that any Visa overstays on the ED Visa would result in a lifetime ban. Now, the guy is Russian so I don't know if its some type of country-specific thing, but I did think it was interesting. This would have been at Chiang Mai Immigration.

Normally, you would be able to go 3 years on extensions without having to leave the country to get a new Visa as long as you keep paying for the courses.

It seems to be more rumor so far than anything else.

Having to go out to an embassy or consulate (no immigration offices outside Thailand) to get a new visa makes no sense to me.

The change on August 12th that have been mentioned are only for entries to country not for extensions of stays.

The new overstay rules are not specific to any type of entry,
