If extension based on marriage is unsuccessful, can I go to savannakhet for multi entry non 0?

Hello all,

End of this month I'm going to try to change the ED visa to non 0, then extension based on marriage. I've met all the requirements, and have all the documentation, therefore I'm hoping there is no problems for the extension. The other slight thing that concerns me is we're moving into our new house just before applying for the non 0.

I often read it 'depends on the immigration officer' on the day in TV.

If I go on the 'wrong' day, or if I get refused the extension for whatever reason, could I go to savannakhet for a multi entry non 0 as a plan B?

Also, as my wife's talian ban is in Chiang Kong, so she wants to do the application in Chiang Sean, opposed to Mea Sae. I've looked at the Chiang Sean website and I'm non the wiser.

Any advice is warmly welcomed,

Thank you. biggrin.png

They will not deny the extension. They may have you come back with additional documents.

Once the the application is accepted the final approval is done a the regional headquarters during the under consideration period.

The only report I can recall of one being denied was because all the money was taken out of the bank before the approval was done.

But you could go out for a non-o if it was denied or apply for a 60 day extension.

Thanks again Joe, do you know if Chiang Sean does non 0?

You cannot change non immigrant visa types at immigration and you never have to wait for a visa to expire to get an extension of stay..

You change the reason for the extension of stay and that is all that needs to be done.

There would be no problem to come if you tried to apply for an extension without the proper financial proof the application would not be accepted then and there.

You can only get a Non Imm 'O' from a Thai Embassy or Consulate.

At the border they can activate an existing Visa or issue a Visa on Arrival which is good for 15 or 30 days depending where you are from.

Thanks, So in that case, my wife is right. Mea sae would have been the wrong place as that is a boarder crossing, but I thought Chiang sean is too.....

If you are asking about doing the extension you will have to do it at the immigration office office where your are living. If you are living in Chiang Rai you would do it at the immigration office in Mae Sai.

Edit: Again I will repeat what I have written before. You do not change visas. It is not possible to change a non immigrant visa type and it is not necessary. You just change the reason for your extension of stay by applying for one based upon marriage.

Depends where you live. I went to Chiang Saen office to get some papers for Ampheu (as Chiang Saen is the closest Immigration office to me) but they passed me to Mae Sai because Chiang Saen only serves people around Chiang Saen.

There is immigration office in Mae Sai. It is now in new location which is at the main road just before the Chiang Khong intersection when coming from Chiang Rai.

I changed from a Non B (working) to a Non O (marriage) at Nan immigration about 9 years ago.

The point is that you did not change your visa. What you did was simply to change the reason for your extension of stay.

I certain all you did was apply for an extension of stay based upon marriage instead of one for working.

It does not matter if you have a B, O, ED or any other type of non immigrant visa they are all the same once you enter the country. It will a permit to stay obtained from a non immigrant visa and that is all that is required to apply for an extension of stay.

If only immigration could have explained it like that !

If you entered Thailand on and ED-visa, are married to a Thai national and are in Thailand I don't see an advantage of going through the trouble of leaving the country to obtain a Non-Immigrant O-visa and then apply for a extension based on marrige.

If your papers are in order, as you say, and you qualify financially, you had better apply for an extension based on marrige without leaving Thailand.

That's exactly why I was confused. I didn't know an ED visa I could be extended based on marriage. Thanks to you and Joe, I'm finally clear. An ED visa is a type of non 0 visa, so I can extend it based on marriage....
