Just read in one of the local papers that they have decided on a route for a new "Bypass Road" for Haad Yai. They give the route in quite good detail, but in general it looks like it will start somewhere near the provincial mosque and end up in KhoHong, to the south.

They will have to acquire lots of private land to make it happen.

I was surprised driving around Haad Yai recently that the traffic is much worse than it was when I lived there over a decade ago (duh!). The double parking even rivals what I have encountered in Phuket Town.

Anyway, if I get time I will dig further into this report and get more info.

By-pass from where to where?

We already have the main N-S Highway that skirts to the west and south and the new Songkhla road that runs to the north. So will this complete the triangle and connect the N-S Highway directly to the new Songkhla road running to the east of Hat Yai?

There is already an existing road there thats quite well used. It runs from the old Songkhla road, in Kho Hong direction, at a set of traffic lights, say 2km past the park and ends up on the new Songkhla road opposite Kho Mee market (where the dual carriageway turns into a car park and people just pull out of the hard shoulder without looking from around 4.00 PM every day ) which is not far from the mosque.

Thanks...I am familiar with that way from many years back, but not sure if this is a completely new route or an upgrade to that one. I will try to find out more.

Well the existing crosslink is dual carriageway to just past the municipal park, so unless it's a completely new road, which I doubt, it's just the extension of this until it hits the New Songkhla Rd.

No, this is a major new road that will require buying land off owners in 18 different communities.

It will start about a kilometer north of the mosque, run southeast through swampland and past the site of an Islamic housing estate currently being built, then will cross Rt 407 (Old Road or Kanchanawanich Rd). From there it will head south and around the back of the Kohong Mountain Range. At the end of the hills it will head southwest until it hits the start of Rt 43 (to Patani)then west crossing over Rt 4 south (to Sadao), then due west to the end near the airport.

Total distance 33km

I spend half the afternoon trying to make my own Google-based map based on the text when I netstumbled across the project website!

So much more info and a good map here (it's in Thai, but it has the major route numbers):

I hope this is helpful.

Strewth, not too sure it makes much difference to the traffic, but it certainly opens up Phichit and the area east of the hills for development; all ripe for new housing development.

It will make the trip to HDY much easier for people in Songkhla Town and points north (like myself) much faster, as well as for people from Patani. I wouldn't say it will reverse the trend for increased traffic in Haad Yai, but it certainly won't hurt.

As you correctly stated, it will likely have a major impact on land prices along the entire route.

Well it makes sense. Currently the hills east of town act as a barrier to development, west of town and north of town is flood plain area and no one really wants to develop there, south is the airport and that's already got plenty of development. So the new road opens up the area east of the hills which is good solid high ground.

You have them the wrong way around.

Jeez, do people on this forum really have nothing better to do than try and find fault with others posts, but seeings you want to call it ..

Kho Mee market is not far from the mosque, its not far from Klong Hae district (2 mins from my house) and Kho Hong is on the the road by the park, i guess, the fact that you will see Kho Hong Police station, in big silver letters is a dead giveaway.

So, the road that runs from Sadao, past Central world, Prince of Songkla university and ends up at the Nam Kra Chai interchange is a now not the old Songkhla road ? and the smooth new tarmac road (in places) that runs past the Mosque, part of the relatively new ring road, that my next door neighbours, all Thai all refer to as the new road, is in fact the old road ?

All is OK, I have just taken my next door neighbour outside and beaten him with a short stick for passing me duff info .. I could hear him muttering "does it really matter ?" between blows, before he finally relented at his last breath.

Recom723 had it right the first time. The new road, where the provincial mosque is located, is The New Road. It was built about 15 years ago.

Heading west from Kor Yor Junction there is a big sign (in Thai only, I think) that indicates 'new road' (right arrow), old road (left arrow).
