Getting a retirement visa(over 50) with 800 000k in the bank but not 3 months yet

Recommended Posts

HI there,

I have a friend that is 50 with money in the bank (800 000 baht) but the money has only been transfered a week ago because of the new rules.

Can he get a retirement visa without the 3 months of money in the bank?

If not, how much for "key money" or for an agency to "arrange" this?

he has no monthly pension, just tons of money in the bank, but still an 'undesirable" I guess! ;)

Cheers!

For a visa, you get from a Thai consulate, showing the money in the bank should be enough to get at least a single non-O that gives him 90 days. During the last 30 days in Thaiand he can than apply for an extension of stay, which by than needs to be in an account in Thailand for 2 months. After that it is 3 months for every extension.

Yes there should be a way to begin with annual retirement extensions legally.

Need more details for more specific advice.

Suggest avoiding illegal schemes especially in this new environment of new "crackdowns" every five minutes.

First of all, what visa or extension of stay type is your "friend" staying in Thailand now on?

When is the expiration of the stay on that?

Also mention what immigration office he will be using in Thailand.

(Some offer conversion to an O in Thailand, some do not.)

What kind of visa or entry does he have now.

If he is wanting to do conversion to a non immigrant visa entry the money just has to be in the bank it does not need to be there for any amount of time.

For the first extension of stay the money only has to be in the bank for 60 days.

Has he done the 30 day extension yet for his 60 day entry. If not he could get it and do he change of visa status during the same trip to immigration.

He could go out for a non-o. Dependent upon where he goes for it would be best to have his bank book and copies of it where he applies.

Ikebukuro5 hasn't explained things very well. But from the message I gather that your friend is on his last few days on a tourist visa, has just transferred money into a Thai bank but will have to wait 2 or 3 months to actually apply for the retirement visa.

He should leave the country before his tourist visa expires and get a non O in a neighboring country then return say a few days later and just wait in Thailand and get an extension of stay until the 90 days has elapsed the just go ahead and apply for it at his local immigration office which I think is in Jom Tien.

There are two logical paths here. Neither of them involve a "retirement visa":

1. Get a single entry O visa in Laos or Malaysia based on being over 50 with intention to apply for an annual retirement extension later in Thailand. Bring evidence of financial qualifications for that to present IF ASKED.

Then during the last 30 days of that 90 day stay, apply for annual extension based on retirement.

As has been pointed out, the bank account only needs to be seasoned for 60 days, not 90 for the FIRST extension.

2.

Enter Thailand again on a 30 day stamp or new tourist visa.

Apply for CONVERSION of the 30 day stamp or tourist visa to "O visa" issued IN THAILAND. Indeed Jomtien supports such applications. Be prepared to show financial qualification for the later retirement extension at that time. At that time of CONVERSION to "O visa" the money DOES NOT need to be fully seasoned.

Then later when the money is seasoned, apply for the annual extension based on retirement at the same office

Getting the O visa in a neighboring country is arguably the better choice, but both paths are possible assuming the applicant is eligible to reenter Thailand with a new tourist visa or 30 day stamp.
