LIBYA
Thai Embassy in Tripoli remains open

BANGKOK: -- Thai Foreign Ministry on Thursday reiterated that Thai Embassy in Libya remains open although its Ambassador Kittipong Na Ranong left for Tunisia to supervise an operation center for evacuees there.

The envoy was accompanied by eight students and is expected to arrive Tunisia this evening local time, said Permanent Secretary for foreign affairs Sihasak Phuengketkeow.

The embassy will have a local staff to work at the embassy. Thailand have set up two operation centers in Tunis and Djerba of Tunisia to facilitate the evacuation from Libya whose situation is worsened by fierce fighting between armed groups.

Sihasak said that a group of seven Thai officials led by Foreign Ministry’s director general for consular affairs Thongchai Yasawas will leave Thailand for Tunisia at midnight tonight.

The team will coordinate with Tunisia on the travelling of Thais back to Thailand as there would be large number of Thais. The team will also issue temporary travel document for the evacuees.

Thongchai said that the ministry has asked Thai Airways to increase 70 seats a flight on its Dubai-Bangkok route to facilitate the Thais from Libya in returning to Thailand.

BANGKOK, 31 July 2014 (NNT) – The Foreign Affairs Ministry has affirmed that Thai workers have been relocated to safer areas away from the war-torn Gaza Strip following the death of a Thai worker.

Thai nationals have been moved to temporarily work at safer locations and many have been asked to stop working in the area adjacent to Gaza.

116 Thai nationals have requested to move away from Gaza, but so far, only 82 of them have been removed from the conflict zones. Twenty-one people have maintained the decision to stay in Gaza, however.

Israeli authorities have been asked to help relocate Thai workers 10 to 20 kilometers away from the Gaza Strip to ensure their safety.

The conflict has, so far, claimed 1,330 Palestinians, who are mostly civilians after 23 days of fighting. The Israeli death toll meanwhile stands at 59, including the slain Thai worker.

EC gears up for appointment of members in the NRC

BANGKOK, 31 July 2014 (NNT) – The Election Commission (EC) is ready to accept nominations of members who would make up the National Reform Council (NRC).

Election Commissioner Puchong Nutrawong said the EC is fully prepared to vet candidates for seats in the council. On July 4, the EC is slated to hold a meeting with EC directors from provinces across Thailand on the selection process.

The interim constitution states that the NRC would consist of no more than 250 members hand-picked by the NCPO from the nominations made by selection committees. A representative from each of Thailand’s 77 provinces as chosen by provincial selection committees will be included in the reform council.

There will be 11 groups of the selection committees to nominate individuals from among 11 professional groups, and a provincial selection committee per each province to select individuals from respective provinces.

This Saturday, the NCPO will also host a special program via the Television Pool of Thailand to publicize the application process for positions in the NRC.
