N47HAN Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Thought id pass this out to the forum. Yesterday we had two calls ,one from kamala and one from bangtao. Both customers have had attempted break ins on the same day. Fortunately no entry was gained in either case , just made a mess of the windows where they tried to open them. Its unusual as it has doubled our call outs in the past 10 years for break ins in one day. Just a heads up as maybe all these guys who have lost their jobs recently have turned to a new career. Hopefully just coincidence . Sent from my GT-N7100 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
tonytigerbkk Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Jesus Christ, with this and the ATM/CIT raid earlier this week, the place is becoming like Liverpool. In fact I remember reading a recent news story where some wench returned to her car and it was up on bricks because the local hoods had nicked the wheels. Huyton or Bootle?
Jimi007 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 I rather doubt that people who actually worked for a living are now resorting to breaking and entering. Most likely kids needing money for yah bah. Glad I have my burglar alarm and she bites!
EBlair48 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Hundreds of jobs have been lost with the recent beach actions. Maybe a thousand or more. I think there will be a jump in crime, I don't how it wouldn't People talk about low unemployment but when the only work available is 10 hours bored stiff at Watsuda for 300 baht, it really is not an alternative.

It's low season, so yes maybe a few hundred. And yes maybe a few thousand at high season. But are those really locals? I highly doubt it. I only know two locals that lost their businesses due to the to the Army actions and they are both okay with it. One is managing his nephew's guest house and I didn't ask my other friend what he was doing now. I also read that there were many Bangkok Taxi drivers that want to come to Phuket and work as the fares are so much higher here! But they are afraid of attacks by the local "mafia", just as the "local" meter taxi drivers that are here already are… I still don't know if I've met an actual local, as in born and raised in Phuket, taxi driver. 1
EBlair48 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Well they came to Phuket to get jobs, which are re being eliminated. So, choices are stay and take cut in pay or go back home and maybe no job. Assuming accurate records are kept, I have no doubt the crime rates will be increasing.

According to the government here in Thailand, there is less than 1% unemployment nation wide. There is a shortage of workers at many hotels and resorts here in Phuket. Most of the crime here I ever read about around here is due to young punks who are most likely meth addicts. Sorry, but I really don't buy into any of your drama, especially when you don't have any facts to back up your claims. 1

Far too many young drug addicts hanging about the place looking to steal the quick buck for their next fix. There is a young punk down next to one of our properties always on the look for an easy steal. Cops have busted him many times yet he still hangs out. Not that this is only a Thailand problem, it's a worldwide problem. 2
ZigZagMan Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 If the taxi drivers can't rob you on the street, they will now come to your house. Makes sense.
hansgruber Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 It's the low season affect. Been happening every low season and will keep happening. Less tourists to rob so they target expat homes. Sent from my D6503 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
Valentine Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Years ago the house next to mine got broken into. There was a card school going on in the house behind & the guys from there jumped the wall & gave the burglar a severe beating, as he had a gun on him, after which they called the cops. This was in a quiet middle class estate with token security. Around that time there were a few burglaries in the estate but we had a dog who would make known his displeasure to strangers so I believe "Charlie" was an effective deterrent. A few years back I had a laptop & some cash stolen from the current house I live in. I occasionally would see some guy slowly cruising around on his m/c checking out all the homes but if I had the chance I always made a point to ensure they knew I had a good look at them. There are a few serial burglars about & sometimes it seems they target a particular area & then move on. We all know that crime is on the increase as it is just about everywhere & I am sure there is some residual increase due to harsher economic circumstances which some people have been forced into. Let's hope the current situation here will continue to bring positive changes which could eventually bring about a decrease in crime. We do not want to become like Port Moresby, for example, where high walls topped with razor wire become the norm.
KarenBravo Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Crime always goes up during rainy season and down in high season.
KarenBravo Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Common sense. People are busy making money in high season. In low season it is harder. Always more reports of burglaries and muggings during low season. Don't believe me? Prove me wrong.
Roel Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I think the 1% unemployment rate is based on the number of Thais that actually go to the Labour Office and register as being unemployed and looking for a job. Very few do this. These are only the more educated ones who are looking for serious carrier opportunities. The majority can't be bothered. They find their odd - most of the time temporary - jobs through family and friends. The actual unemployment rate is certainly much higher. But there is probably a significant percentage of voluntarily unemployment too.
khounteen Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Coming from Africa, this is paradise. They rob casinos in a gang of 20 armed with AK47s.
NamKangMan Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 There are many reasons why reported crime is increasing on Phuket. Unemployment, less free spending tourists, rising household debt, gambling, drugs, unsupervised youth, low season etc. Petty crime, whilst inconvenient, most can recover from the loss. It's the level of violence used in the crime here, such as stabbings, that is of a concern.
