At 7.30am this morning, Khim Chumreoun the Chief of Phnom Penh CNRP Youth was arrested at a restaurant in Takhmao town, south of Phnom Penh, and transported to Phnom Penh Municipal Police Station. Chumreoun was formally accused alongside the other eight CNRP officials who were detained for 1 week at CC1 and CC2 over the violence at Freedom Park on July 15th.

The arrest of Chumreoun comes at a sensitive time as the CNRP continue to negotiate over constitutional amendments with the CPP. Additionally, the other 8 CNRP officials who were released as part of a political deal on July 22 are still facing charges and have been summoned for questioning in the coming days.

Cambodia arrests opposition activists involved in violent protest

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Cambodian authorities on Saturday arrested three opposition activists for their alleged involvement in a violent protest last month that left dozens injured, the opposition party said in a statement.

"Three activists of the (opposition) Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) were arrested on Aug. 2, 2014. They were accused of being involved in the violent activities on July 15," the statement said.

The statement called for the release of the activists without any conditions.

A violent clash between CNRP activists and security guards on July 15 left more than 40 persons injured, mostly security guards.

After the clash, eight CNRP politicians, including seven lawmakers-elect, were arrested and charged with leading insurrection, but were freed on bail a week later after Prime Minister Hun Sen, vice-president of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), and CNRP president Sam Rainsy reached an agreement to end the CNRP's ten-month long boycott of parliament over election results in exchange for an overhaul of the National Election Committee and power sharing in the parliament.
