August 3, 201411 yr It seems to be common knowledge that you can not get a work permit to be a boat captain here. I am sure I saw it on the restricted list many years ago, but I have recently heard different. In a short search I did not see it as something a farang can not do.Does anyone know anything about this particular position.
August 3, 201411 yr Dunno, suppose depending on category of masters license, surely if transitting thru international waters as many foreigners do then no probs,, if a fishing boat captain/skipper then no way, Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
August 3, 201411 yr In order to get a work permit you would need to be working for a Thai company. Not sure if boat captain would be considered driving.. This from Occupations and Professions Prohibited to Aliens "Driving a mechanically propelled carrier or driving a non-mechanically propelled vehicle, excluding international aircraft piloting;"
August 3, 201411 yr Hi,just wondering where you obtain your visa from these days?..thanks.. that question is for DanBlack
August 3, 201411 yr "Driving a mechanically propelled carrier or driving a non-mechanically propelled vehicle, excluding international aircraft piloting;" I suppose the non-mechanically-propelled carrier is to stop non-Thais from riding samlors or tandem bicycles for profit? The mechanically-propelled presumably covers cars, steam-rollers and sit-on lawn tractors.
August 3, 201411 yr Another thought I'd suggest it depends on what the boat captain plans on doing with the boat? Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
August 3, 201411 yr Author I usually apply for and get my visas in Phuket town The bot I am working on is for private use
August 3, 201411 yr The simplest way to grasp the work-permit legalities is to reduce it to the bare essentials. Thai Law says (in short): Whatever a Thai-National can do, a Foreigner is not allowed to do. Can a Thai steer a ship? = Yes. Ergo Falang can not do. Can a Thai drive a taxi? = yes. Ergo a Farang can not do. And so on....... OP might be tempted to switch over to the "Farang Diving Instructor Camp". Too late. After the visa-shakedown, the work-permit shakedown is to follow as sure as the amen in church. - Can a Thai function as a diving instructor? = Yes. Etc. etc......... Make of it what you wish. Cheers..
