Public health ministry warns of addiction to sexually explicit content online among teens

BANGKOK, 3 August 2014 (NNT) - The Department of Mental Health has expressed concerns over sexual assault and premature sex in adolescents caused by sexual content in online media. Parents and the society are urged to help create immunity against addiction to sexual content online.

Psychiatrist from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Rajanagarindra Institute MD Thiphawan Buranasin said teenagers who were addicted to sexual content online had higher risks to be sexually assaulted or engage in premature sex. They might also risk being infected with sexual diseases, getting pregnant and having an abortion, the psychiatrist warned.

One of the most concerned health issues among Thai teens was unintended pregnancy with adolescents younger than 15-16 years old having sexual intercourse for the first time, MD Thiphawan added.

The psychiatrist therefore suggested that parents should observe their children to see if they were addicted to online sexual media and learn more about technology so that they could help prevent the addiction.

Isn't online porn like all porn, illegal in Thailand?

From what I have read and seen, the people are naturally oversexed. No need to now blame the internet. They don't need any additional stimulant.               biggrin.png

Perhaps instead of spreading this alarmist nonsense about sexual addiction, this individual could promote better sex education and counselling in schools and campaign on the importance of using contraceptives.

Ah, the joys of growing up

So they are no longer recommending kids go play football instead?

Answer for sexual relief is football

Producing and distributing/selling is, but not personal possession by adults.

Effects of watching porn can't be as bad as the trauma suffered after seeing this on your screen...

Teens like sex

Better they help themselves at home with porn and partake in safe sex than just blame something else and let underage pregnancies continue.

Ah yes, online is the issue. Forgot they can get their phones filled with porn at any porn shop for 50b.

Pesky foreigners once again. Perhaps a computer crackdown for foreigners will be next.

The young men will go blind.....the young girls can all come over to my place.....whistling.gifwhistling.gif

When I was young in Europe the normal age people had the first time sex was 15-16 years. Some might be a bit younger some a bit older.

The solution for sexual diseases, getting pregnant and having an abortion is a brand new high tech product the good doctor might not have heard about yet. It is called Condom.

And change the law and culture about abortion.

parents should observe their children to see if they were addicted to online sexual media...

Sounds like a recipe for family disaster...maybe unintended incest would follow...IMO

You may want to consider what 'online' means these days

Once again we are subjected to unsubstatiated pronouncements with undefined terms typical of medical personnel reacting to their gut feelings. A true study might actually find that young people who satisfy their natural sexual drive online are much less likely to contract std's and females are much less likely to get pregnant than teens who experiment in the backseat of a car after an evening of shisha. Just sayin.......

Finally!!! and this is my 3rd post here about this....I had a very bad family situation in 2000 with a teenager meeting somebody from a chat online, leaving home for 2 days without any notice with a predator, and later founding that she was hooked online all night in her room....

And..at that time, pornography on the internet was not free, and not tablets and I pods in teenagers hands....

After washing on Thailand TV censored soap operas, no kisses, no bikinis on beaches, etc, etc..., was a big surprise finding preliminary school students watching very explicit porno on their tablets, and to see the teenagers in my wife family hooked with their tablets all day without any control.

But, more than that, Asian porno is not just free, is the more explicit, morbid, and sick that any I saw in my life...showing incest, rape, group sex, homosexuality, anything you can imagine, and what you cannot imagine. That in kid minds?? Nothing good to expect...

Define addiction? Hard to believe the nonsense the MOH spits out on a regular basis

I'm sure the same study was done 150 years ago when they released those spinning photo reels where you could see a woman showing a bit of ankle for a penny. The youth will become addicted and start stealing money to see these picture shows!!! The world is over!!!
