I think thai ppl are obsessed with getting new rides.
Just traded my car for a pick up..
The gf kept asking me to change to the newest nissan navara or ford ranger.
I blatantly said:"I'm not thai. I dun need face. I just want a cheap and new pick up that I can used." She shut her trap immediately.
I was about to tell her that I am the one paying so I get to choose.
Her stupid mother kept calling to ask about which brand we bought.
She seemed disappointed that I opted for a cheaper brand.
I dun care. They are not paying so they better shut their mouths right?

Its nothing to do with new rides, its all about face and status.

What they dont tell you is, their family/surname will always drag them down.

Too be honest, if I were you, I would ditch the g/f, never mind khun mair trying to act like a big shot at the local market at someone elses expense.

Tell her D-Max rawks, numba one in Thailand.

If the g/f or khun mair aint happy, take them by the hand to the local Toyota dealer and let them sign up for instant finance or "dawn" as its known in Thai.

Haha good one! She actually wanted me to buy a hilux when I signed for a Mitsubishi.
Kept calling to say Mitsubishi ain't good.
I dun give a sh!t. I do what my head and money says.
If the gf or her mum wants to make noise, I'll just give them a piece of my mind.

Both will still be driving their clix to the local market.

Exactly my thoughts. Why must I be the one paying and must listen to someone who knows nuts about cars..

aren't people here paid monthly - if so then you can say you pay them 7 days a week or not - it's irrelevant no?

Some people are paid daily , like casual or part time staff , full timers are paid monthly , minimum monthly wage of 9000 baht , meaning days off are paid , as it must by law

We do not pay if a worker take Sundays off and we are not breaking the law. We have been in business for 8 years and have had audits on our books several times with no issues. All of our employees punch time cards. If they work more than 8hrs in day they get paid over time. If they need to work on Sunday which is considered a day off (Holiday) they get paid double time. This is standard. You think all the offices in BKK pay their workers for Sat and Sun.. No. Someone is telling you a good story to get paid when they dont work. Have you read the Thai labor laws or do you go on what your staff tells you? Been living and working here for 20 years. Have been in management of several companies prior to owning my company and all the companies I worked at have done the same. You get paid when you work. You get paid holidays and sick days. Also you still say 25K-30K for experienced office staff? Again you are paying the High expat wagers, this is not normal. My thai friends tell me I'm paying too much. They pay 10K for office staff dont care how many years experience.

can an average office worker work hard...
...
back in my country, a Corolla would cost about six months salary

Income:
Seven 11 about 9000 Baht/month.
Skilled factory labourer up to 20000.
Avarage office worker might earn up to 30000 (no managment position)
School director/high level government officer might make 60000.
(farang English teacher 25000 to 40000 and more tongue.png )

A corolla type car in basic edition costs about 600000 Baht.

600000/9000: 67 months, out of reach
/20000: 30 months, very hard even with going deep into debt.
/30000: 20 months, still hard
/60000: 10 months, doable

So even the 30000 Baht middle class income has to struggle hard.
Different perspective if there is a couple with good double income.

There were some statistics recently about private debt of Thai families.
Thais are very high in debt.
Some low earners pay 40% of their income just for car dept.

Other way round: in Germany an avarage office worker could make 3500 EUR/month, about 150000 Baht/month.
If he would invest 20 months of income for the car, that would make up for 70000 EUR.
That would be much more than a Corolla biggrin.png
An the truth is: some do!

Who told you these figures? I think you are off. If you think Toyota is paying their factory workers 20,000B a month you are kidding yourself.
They make minimum wage. I pay my factory workers above minimum wages and they still only average about 8000B a month without overtime.
Office staff makes 10-12K per month. Accountant is getting 20,000B a month and I pay more than my Thai friends that own companies. My friend his wife was the assistant to the CEO of HUTCH, she speaks, Thai, English and French fluently and has a masters and she was only making 35K per month.
7-11 I'm sure is only paying minimum wage so 6 days a week is 7,200B a month. I own a company at this time but have worked in Thailand for 20 years and been in several management positions over the years never seen any office staff getting paid more than 15K per month in a non-management position.

You might want to update your figures or pay a visit to Bkk circa 2014.

Cleaners, 500 baht per day.
Factory workers making 10-12k per month, with free company accomodation.
Truck drivers (as writen on the back of farmhouse delivery truck adverts) salary 15-20k per month.
Uni graduates walking into 25k + jobs (non management position).
BIL engineer Nissan, 40k per month.

As for the trilingual speaking woman you mention, she could easily double that in Bkk.

Just as a matter of interest, where are you posting from/where is your factory?

That girl was working in BKK. My factory is in Ubon.

Who is providing these figures? Employment agencies will post these high figures to get people in then you end up with much lower pay. Truck drivers make 15K can be up to 20K if going everyday. Our truck driver makes about 17K. He gets paid by the run. My wife's sister is a teacher in a public school in Issan and she only manke 8K per month. ( That blows the whole you have to get paid 9K as that is min wage out the window Mr. Konyoing as the govt is going to follow the rules) My nice works for Robinsson in BKK and make 400B a day, she only gets paid days she works. Which she works 6 days a week 9am to 9pm.

This is true. My sister in law bought new Honda Amize or what ever is called, with finance over 7 years.
She have salary only 9000 thb. I was like "OMG"

but this is not the biggest problem. Problem is that house, if you can call that a house, is all broken and waiting new rain to destroy it completely.

Edit: Forgot to add that she is about 5km from school where she working

You should have given her a kind of car, similar, to your avatar photo.  wink.png

Another thing I noticed was that pretty much all of these new cars, are all specced out

Eg rims, leather, sports pack, tinting, spoilers etc

I found that pretty odd especially since the cars are expensive for an average salary

In my home country cars are still pretty expensive but nothing compared to thailand, and about 80% of the cars are stock standard

Is it the mentality of since I've got a new car I may as well go all out OR what's the point of a new car that's bottom of the range, it needs to have all the bells and whistles"

First poster salary's apply for Bangkok or Phuket.   The rest of the country mostly has lower salary's.

Also take in account, that many people own (small) businesses and work (hard) long hours.

The comparison between more advance economies and Thailand doen't make sence.  In Thailand households will feel a car is more important than the house or the room.  Many will spent much more money on there car, then for there house/room.    Family's will help pay for debts.   Many family's own land/houses, so they have back up in case its needed.   For sure the debt ratio is very high, and a high percentage will fail to repay all there debts, (maybe 10-15%), so that means most people will be ok with there debts.

Really some comparison are just silly to make, different culture, different climate, different interests.

Salaries are higher in Phuket than the eastern seaboard ?  What are these jobs in Phuket ?

10,000 a month for playing line and facebook in air conditioning isn't bad.

My brother in law got his mother to buy him a new car on the never-never during the 100,000 Baht campaign last year.

He then told my wife he needed to borrow 10,000 Baht for something related to his job, and then used the money to get a bumper and side skirt--which he scrapes every time he pulls up into the driveway.  sad.png

You can look successful in a new Corolla, but you'll need to paint it a bright colour, like bright green, bright pink, etc to really show off. Then put a red LED display in your front passenger dash that says ว่าง, this is Thai for 'available' so everyone knows you're single.

You will look so successful that people will come right up to your car and ask you to take them places just to be close to someone of your grandeur (also to enjoy the opulent interior or your new Corolla).
