Former Democrat MP fined for defaming Surapong
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Former Democrat MP Chavanond Intharakomalsut was given a suspended jail term and a Bt100,000 fine on Wednesday for defaming former foreign minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul.

The Criminal Court found Chavanon guilty of defaming Surapong during press conferences held on September 24 and 25, 2011.

During the press conferences, Chavanon alleged that Surapong had ordered the transfers of two officials causing damage to the country in relation to the border dispute with Cambodia.

The court ruled that the facts showed this was not the case and that Chavanond had made the allegations to stir up animosity towards Surapong. The court noted that Chavanond did not mention the allegations during a no-confidence debate against Surapong,

The court initially sentenced Chavanond to two years in jail and a fine of Bt100,000 but suspended the jail term on the grounds that he has never committed a crime.

Chavanond was also ordered to publish an apology in Krungthep Turakij and Kom Chad Luek for seven days.

Suraspong had earlier also sued the two papers, their editor, publishers and reporters for publishing Chavanon's statements but later dropped the suit.

Chavanon paid the fine and said he was considering an appeal against the ruling.

I didn't think it was possible to defame Surapong considering all the things man has said and done since taking office.

But the courts never convict a Democrat or their allies?

All the Shin supporters always claim that.

Let's hope all convicted wrong doers are punished.

Surapong would have to be the worst foreign Minister you could imagine, the only minister to complain to the UN that Suthep protesters were harming the PTP, talk about a sook, Surapong was also regarded as a dill, however this character has the brains of a nat and we can expect to see him and he's mates ,(if not in jail) lining up to line their pockets once again when democratic elections are held, unless of course General Prayuth has drummed them all out of politics forever, one can only hope.coffee1.gif

Surapong, infamous for issuing a criminal a Thai passport.

That didn't take long did it? I presume you missed this;

Here are two of Jataporn's cases. I think that they always suspend the sentence for a first offense. Jataporn has at least 2.

... and, has Chavanond Intharakomalsut ever been found guilty of committing a crime?

For the benefit of those that struggle with understanding what the word "convict" means, this phrase from the article is repeated:

The Criminal Court found Chavanon guilty

Do not forget that Democrats own the truth and are assisted of special rights worldwide... So they feel and believe.

That verdict and sentence restores some of the luster that Thai courts lost in previous years.

And how many Thaksin supporters have received suspended sentences? Has the PTP spokesman sentenced to jail last year ever served one day in jail?

HiSo wealthy elites don't do prison here - and the Shins and senior PTP/UDD are just part of that elite group vying for power. No one in the group is attacked violently or put in prison - only minions suffer those.

Thaksin was sentenced to prison - but in reality was allowed to flit and there have been no real attempts at extradition. Someone wanted him banished maybe, but not actually put in prison.

Do you think all wrongdoers should be punished or that the Shins and their supporters are really above the law?

Look up irony, parody and sarcasm. Might help you understand the posts you take too literally.

I should have thought it nigh on impossible to defame Surapong.
