Why doesn't Thailand have a smile visa? An open letter to the General

Featured Replies

This is an open letter to General Prayuth Chan-ocha and any senior Immigration officer.

Why doesn't Thailand finish the retirement visa and create a smile visa?

The age criteria can be 35 years old and the deposit requirement 800,000 THB (the same as the current retirement visa).

Retirement is now becoming an obsolete concept.  What retirement really means is financial independance.  Either through a pension or lump sum personal savings and investments.

If someone can meet the financial requirements of Thailand's current retirement visa, why shouldn't he or she be eligible for a visa (even if he or she is under 50 years of age)?

Why is a 50 year old expat more attractive than someone aged 35-49 years old?

The younger expat will go out to restaurants and other entertainments spots more often and spend more than the older expat.

The younger expat is more likely to learn Thai language and assimilate more effectively into Thai culture and society.

If he or she has children with a Thai partner, the younger expat is more likely to be an active and effective parent.

The younger expat is less likely to have serious medical conditions that could place a drain on Thai health services.

The friends of a younger expat are more likely to come and visit him or her thus increasing tourism arrivals.

The younger expat is less likely to have mental health issues (such as alzeihmer's) that result in memory loss and then problems with visa renewal and overstay.

The younger expat is less likely to have physical health issues that could result in problems with visa renewal and overstay.

And so, if the General or any other Senior immigration official reads this, please just lower the age requirement on the retirement visa to 35 (keep all of the financial requirments) and change the name of the visa to the Smile visa or the Sabai visa.

The Philippine's government already have a smile visa, why doesn't Thailand also have one?

Thank you very much for your kind consideration.
