There are a lot of contradictory posts on this topic.

Extension of O visa based on having a Thai wife requires

400,000THB wired into a Thai bank from outside Thailand or

taxed earnings from legitimate Thai employment of 40k a month.

That is not in doubt.

Does someone with a pension of 40k a month from outside Thailand qualify for annual extension and if so does the full 40k have to be transferred to a Thai bank each month?

I fear the issue may not be resolved and it may depend on where you go for your extension.

Yes I, but not finish yet.

My pension (more than 40k) is transferred each month from the state direct into my bank in Thailand and have also a certificate from the embassy which noted the annual salary (in IV disability scheme).

I have to show also a bankstatement of this amount to the immigration.

So in my case has to be 40k and not lesser. Maybe it gives other options for example mix with deposit... but with this I don't have experience.

See Required documents, Visa Extension, to support a wife who is Thai citizen or who is a permanent resident (non-Thai husband).

Financial documentation:

- Bank statement and copy of bank account showing at least 400,000.- Baht deposit

- Employment evidence, work permit, and tax documentation showing an income of at least 40,000.- Baht.

The question that you may have to ask yourself is that if the money is not transferred to Thailand, then how can it be used to support a Thai wife in Thailand?

Thankyou eugeneri. I am encouraged.

Vinny.

I asked if the FULL amunt has to be transferred. I may have modest expenses and can survive on 30k. Retirees can get extension based on 65k/month but it is well documented that they do not need to transfer the full amount.

Your quote is at variance with what is shown on the immigration bureau website:

Financial evidence showing financial status of the husband

1 Bank account pass-book, personal bank statement of the account owner.

2 Evidence indicating income along with related documents. If receiving pension, a document of pension payment certified by the embassy or consulate of the country that pays pension is needed.

3 In case of working in Thailand, Work permit and evidence of tax payment are required.

Para 2 states that pension is OK. So what is my problem? Reading through this forum it seems Immigration may NOT accept pension in practice.

Now I am confused!!!! The immigration site appears contradictory.

Does the pension only apply where the wife is an alien permanent resident?

Is there anyone else out there who has a visa extension for support Thai wife using the 40k/month pension route?

Yes, first they asked me if I can show 400k in the bank. I said no, but I can show you a

guarantee letter from the embassy that I have a fix government pension every month. Followed from some questions, why I have pension and how long...? But after they said okay.

Can you further post if you are is over 50 years (as that may also come into play so best any answers include that information). Thanks.

I have the appearance it is an important question. I'm 47.

If that should play for me an old role, then would be the following scenario:

You are not yet 50 however 100% invalid, you can only get an extension with work permit or 400k deposit, or you are over 50 in addition 100% invalid, you can get one extension with 400k deposit in the bank.

For pensions IMHO it's a matter of discretion of immigration officers - or I'm wrong.

Been here 8 years and never had a problem with my Embassy certified pension document. Have never been asked to show that the money come into this country until this year when I pulled out about 20 ATM receipt of of my wallett, which they accepted. Have not received the VISA extension yet but should do so within the next couple of weeks.

They also asked why I had not saved that much over the last 8 years, to which I replied that I was "married to a thai woman" the laughed and understood the contradiciton of their question.

Yes I am over 50 (I wish I wasn't) and I know about retirement visas.

One member has confirmed that he has been granted extension of stay on the basis of overseas pension.

That is encouraging. But I wish to know if he is an exceptional case.

The only way to determine this is if other members confirm they also are granted extension of stay to support Thai wife based on overseas pension.

For my benefit, but also for the benefit of others I think it about time this issue was resolved.

My question of age was to the poster who was able to obtain the extension using pension income. He was under age 50 which would indicate they do not use age as a basis for allowing this method.

Lopburi.

I did not realise that you were not directing the question to me. But it is a good question.

Forum members defer to you so I think it is fair to ask your opinion on this issue?

No problem for me using letter obtained from USA Embassy "guaranteeing" my pension.

Over 50. Nothing exceptional about my situation.

I am 62 and I am going for my 3rd Support visa next month. It would have been 5 but I forgot to get a reentry visa one time and had to start again.

I have 2 pensions from the UK from which I get a letter each year and take to the embassy to be certified. Together they come to more than 40,000 baht a month, but only 1 is paid over here. Nobody has asked about the other one.

Try to keep a fair amount in the bank as Immigration calculate the 40,000 baht at a lower rate than the banks.

I hope that helps.

ps. I tried the immigration website download from Firefox but it only works with IE.

Can finally open my champagne :o .

Last entry was middle Jan 2006, so it has a validity till middle Jan 2007. The time of changing my Tourist visa in a „O“ and waiting for approval took time many months. So that‘s my experience - cheers. :D
