NLA vote on next PM set for August 21, 22

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly will call a vote on the next prime minister on August 21 or 22, its deputy chairman said yesterday.

Surachai Liengboonlertchai said he supports General Prayuth Chan-ocha, chief of the National Council for Peace and Order, for the position.

The Army chief is the most suitable candidate because he has demonstrated complete dedication to work for the country.

"But the decision rests with the NLA'' he said.

Jade Siratharanont, another assemblyman, said he backs Prayuth and most of the chamber also agrees that Prayuth is the best candidate to lead the country at this political juncture.

There would be no need to present other candidates. Most surveys also showed that Prayuth had the public's approval, he said.

"It depends on whether Prayuth will accept,'' he said.

Master Poll's latest survey showed that 84 per cent of local leaders believe Prayuth should assume the PM's role.

Surachai said the NLA would hold the first reading of the fiscal 2015 budget bill, an urgent agenda item, on Friday.

The NLA has only one month to scrutinise the budget bill before the fiscal year begins, he noted.

Just a thought,  a forgone conclusion ?

Not so much an election as an appointment by acclamation methinks!

I hope Khun Prayuth rejects the PM position. If one is to sit as judge, jury and executioner with an overview of how all the structures, not just political, are reforming and the flexibility to be able to tweak and change then you have to be able to apply the same to oneself if you choose to sit within the structure. That is a step to far. He needs to still sit separately in the more important role as the putty moulder.

That aside pleasing to see that the process is humming along and only after 3 months of Junta happiness Thailand is about to get a PM and interim government installed. Very impressive Khun Prayuth. Thailand and the world as a whole could do with a lot more of his fibre and size balls.

Agree he should not take up the position as PM at this point but stay on as head of NCPO then come September and retirement time extend his service time for another year.

When the time comes for a general election he should resign from the army and stand as a candidate either for a new of existing party with the understanding that if he is elected he will be elected PM.

That then gives him legitimacy as an elected PM rather than an appointed one and he can carry on the good work from there with his foot firmly on the neck of any rogue politicians who might get into the house.

From the interim constitution:

It looks that way. Who else is eligible and wants the job? We'll find out on the 21-22 August.

There's nothing in section twenty which makes Gen. Prayuth ineligible.

the man has set Thailand on the right path so far, he has done more in a few months than yl did in a couple of years, stopped a lot of the corrupt practices of several departments and sorted the police favoritism to the shins/reds out. So far he has very good credentials for the job but I am sure all the ptp/red fans in here will disagree because he has well and truly hit them for a six. As long as this anti corruption stance keeps up and the people are put first the country will do very well.

A nail biting conclusion when the voting is counted at the election.
