Pneumonia claims at least 521 lives in Thailand so far this year

BANGKOK, 11 August 2014 (NNT) – Over 100,000 cases of pneumonia have been reported in Thailand this year as more respiratory diseases associated with rainy season are being detected.

The Public Health Ministry said the monsoon season increases the exposure to various bacterial and viral infections, causing more people to become vulnerable to diseases and fall ill. Pneumonia is the leading killer of all contagious diseases during this period, where at least 521 people have died this year from January 1st to July 21st, 2014.

The disease is commonly found among elderly people and children aged 5 and lower due to their weak immune system. For this reason, the ministry has instructed provincial health offices to closely monitor the situation, as germs that cause pneumonia are usually found in the mouth and nose of the infected person.

The germs can be transmitted easily to another person, either through the air or by touching a contaminated surface. Those who contracted influenza during this period are also advised to rest at home to prevent the spread of the disease.

If pneumonia is a condition as "Fine Specimen" said, then why have I had an injection that lasts for ten years to prevent me catching it?  Over 65's are told by their Doctor that they should receive this injection as a matter of course.  Not being an expert, I don't understand the reasoning if the disease is simply a 'condition'.

Anybody got any opinion on this and has anyone else had the 'pneumonia' jab?

It is often considered an opportunistic disease/condition that develops in people otherwise compromised for various reasons. When I was young I had pneumonia a couple of times, including "walking pneumonia." Once on the heels of  chicken pox (for the second time).

There are a number of vaccines given to prevent/reduce the chance of developing pneumonia:

Reduce Your Risk

In the United States, there are several vaccines that prevent infection by bacteria or viruses that may cause pneumonia. These vaccines include

  • pneumococcal,
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib),
  • pertussis (whooping cough),
  • varicella (chickenpox),
  • measles, and
  • influenza (flu).

What Is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can cause mild to severe illness in people of all ages. Common signs of pneumonia can include cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. Certain people are more likely to become ill with pneumonia. children younger than 5 years of age;

This includes

  • adults 65 years of age or older;
  • children younger than 5 years of age;
  • people who have underlying medical conditions (like diabetes or heart disease); and
  • people who smoke cigarettes or have asthma.

Encourage friends and loved ones with certain health conditions, like diabetes and asthma, to get vaccinated against the flu and bacterial pneumonia.

Causes of Pneumonia

In the United States, common causes of viral pneumonia are influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and a common cause of bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). In children younger than 1 year of age, RSV is the most common cause of pneumonia.

Types of Pneumonia

When someone develops pneumonia in the community (not in a hospital), it's called community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Pneumonia developed during or following a stay in a healthcare facility (like hospitals, long-term care facilities, and dialysis centers) is called healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP), which includes hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).

I have had it in the past and when I felt it coming on I gave it two days to be sure and then went to the doctor who gave me some pills to take for it. Worked in the first day. By the time I was three days into them there was no more symptoms.

She could not give me the best pill for it because I take Wharfin  or Bhufrin to thin my blood. Sorry about the spelling It is an aspirin that has been working out at the gym and is very powerful.wai.gif

Edit

I forgot to mention that I have a general doctor who knows every thing I take and is able to sort out what goes with what. If I need a specialist she recommends one and has the records from them also. I just feel it is nice to have one doctor who has all my medical history.

"then went to the doctor who gave me some pills to take for it."

Presumably you had bacterial pneumonia and received an antibiotic. Viral pneumonia isn't treated as easily, especially if the body's immune system is compromised.

There are other diseases that have similar symptoms, including pleurisy and bronchitis, all of which I had when I was young. My father was a smoker and back then, in medieval times, we didn't fully appreciate the collateral effects of second-hand smoke.

My post from yesterday on "l Almost Died from Legionnaires Disease in Pattaya" which led to Pneumonia, also known in medical terms as legionella-pneumonia, just shows how significant a health issue this is for anyone. Yes, young children, aged, those who are diabetic and low immune system complaints are most at risk, but can also affect a healthy 25YO. Is the figure of 521 deaths accurate, as I'm sure that there may be hundreds of others that go unreported in these stats. Pneumonia is a bacterial infection, not virus, and is non contagious, but very deadly also. The question also is the source of where does one pickup this deadly disease. Is it only from contaminated water tower aircond systems, water fountains, water spray units etc. Does anyone know of any other sources of pneumonia? Would like to learn more about it if someone out there professes to being more of an expert on the subject.

... and don't forget the daily Ginseng during colds, or when your body is tired because of overwork.

Eat Garlic, Ginger Tumeric, and cinnamon and mix it with Organic Honey and you are pneumonia free biggrin.png

Mix it in food, make a tea or eat it raw ...up to you my friend

Best Regards

I had the pneumonia "jab" after slowly recovering from a bout which almost carried me off. Doctor told me that the shot was good for five years. I think time is about up on that one.

521 lives lost in Thailand this year already. RIP to all those people.

About half a dozen deaths world wide from SARS during which time there was world wide panic and crazy precautions taken by people. I recall flying from Melbourne to Bangkok during this with less than quarter full plane with most people wearing masks.

521 lives lost thus far in Thailand and it gets a calm mention on National News.

Once again we have careless wording that can, unfortunately, be misunderstood to say that one can get sick from exposure to rain. No wonder the myth won't die. Edited by attrayant
