August 11, 201411 yr I'm new to Chiang Mai and I have taken notice that there seems to be a national holiday today (Monday) and tomorrow. Could someone give me a background to what is going on? Is there a central location to any festivities associated with the holiday? Thank you!

August 11, 201411 yr Author Holiday is for the reason of the birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. 12 August. Oh great! Does Chiang Mai celebrate in any particular fashion? Are there customs of which I should be aware? Where's the birthday cake and candles? How does everyone celebrate?

Mother's Day is also celebrated on the Queens Birthday so I think most people celebrate with a meal with their mum / mum in-law I'm not sure if there is an official celebration
