Kanga Japan
Does anyone know the Thai script for Italian basil? I have it listed as BAI RAH, but cannot find it anywhere. Thank you.
Pla shado
Hopefully someone can confirm but I believe Italian Basil translates to อิตาเลียนใบโหระพา in Thai script.
harrry
I will try and find the packs of seeds I got but in case I cannot. HomePro sell packets of seeds. Among them they sell two types. Thai basil and what they call American Basil which is the Italian one. It grows fairly easily but it is not the same taste as the local basil and I have not found it for sale except farang outlets like hydroponic places.
Kanga Japan
Dear Pla shado, Thank you for your quick reply. That sounds good to me - easy to understand. Let's see if anyone is aware of any other words. I appreciate your help.
Kanga Japan
Dear Harry, Thanks for your reply. Please let me know if you find the packet and what the Thai script is on it.
WitawatWatawit
Bit confusing, this one.I can't read Thai very well, certainly not the stylised fonts. But I can't recall having seen the writing on any seed packets that shado has given us above - not even the word horapa.I have two packets of basil seeds at the moment. In English, one is sweet basil, and the other holy basil, but I can't recognise or read any of the Thai writing. My beloved SIL came down from the country one day and told me the sweet basil (which is defying my brown thumb and growing gloriously) was horapa, Thai basil. But, but, I said. SIL is not to be argued with. She went out and bought a plant and said this is sweet basil. Haven't planted the holy basil. I've seen various other basil seed packets, but none called Italian or American basil. Will keep looking though. Cheers, Wit
Kanga Japan
Thanks Wit, HORAPHA is sweet basil. Let's see if anyone can find another name for Italian basil. The word which Pla shado gave sounds OK.
harrry
Wrong....horapa is thai basil....they think it is the same. Italian basils leaves are a bit larger and more fleshy. it has a much sweeter taste.
WitawatWatawit
^^^ Argue that with my SIL. I dare you. Just for your edification, a pix of the two basil seed packets I have.

WitawatWatawit
Absolutely no idea, mate. My daughter is back in Bkk and my other SIL is at work. I'm Thai-less.
AyG
Neither of the seed packs is Italian basil. Usually referred to as โหระพาฝรั่ง (HORAPHA FARANG) or อิตาลีเบซิล (ITALI BESIL) or อิตาเลียนเบซิล (ITALIAN BESIL). For the leaves themselves, the BAI goes at the beginning e.g. ใบโหระพาฝรั่ง (BAI HORAPHA FARANG).

kokesaat
There's a large Italian basil farm in Chumporn. http://www.rakbankerd.com/agriculture/page.php?id=3786&s=tblplant My wife says Makro often carries large bags of fresh Italian basil....I suspect to satisfy the needs of many Italian restaurants in Udon.
