Boot camp programme for warring vocational students in Ayutthaya

BANGKOK: -- Representatives of students from four vocational colleges in Ayutthaya province which are infamous for frequent scuffles and other violent activities in the public will be put together for re-education to change their violent behavior at a boot camp in Nakhon Nayok.

The three-day behaviourial rehabilitation is part of the programme to return happiness to the society and parents jointly organized Ayutthaya provincial administration and the police.

Twenty-five student leaders who are prone to violence from each of the four colleges namely Ayutthaya Technical College, Ayutthaya College of Technology and Ship-building Industry, Ayutthaya Technology College and Ayutthaya Commercial College will be selected to join the programme under the close supervision of police and military instructors and psychologists.

After the completion of the three-day programme, all the 100 student representatives will be made goodwill ambassadors who promote and encourage their peers at the colleges to refrain from violence and to take part in social activities together.

A very good idea, the result of the same programme for juveniles around my Oz hangout , found them all learning new trades , unfortunately not what the grand design had in mind , you actually breed revolt, anti social behaviour , when you place young men in places together that they don't want to be in, I supported this programme and it backfired big time, so the lesson learned, lay off the heavy handed stuff, there are other measures that can be adopted or you might learn to regret it, I rest my case.

This may actually work if it is done properly. That means configuring 'teams' that are each composed of students from the full mix of schools and having them do team-based (cooperative) tasks, perhaps in friendly competition with the other mixed teams. Having to work cooperatively with students from the other schools (perhaps against teams that have students from one's own school) should break down the exaggerated school-self identification at play here and weaken the us-versus-them mentality. This has been demonstrated decades ago in an experiment at a summer camp for teens (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robber%27s_Cave_study#Robbers_cave_study). It's much more than disciplining the kids (like 'boot camp') or teaching them trades... it's about breaking down the tribalism that's developed between the schools and creating relationships (or at least respect and understanding) across the school boundaries. Hope they can pull it off...

A three DAY boot camp will not have much effect. A three MONTH boot camp will.

Castration is a proven method to curb violent behavior...and cheaper. Only needs a pair of scissors and iodine. w00t.gif

I don't agree with Chinarong.

Having served in the army men were in a real shock when they got there. People decided very quickly they did not want to be there.

They finally strongly bonded.

That is a western culture and much brain washing goes into that when you serve in a western army that one of the reasons they finally bond

In Thailand the culture is no wear near the same and no one can bond in 3 days. (I agree with Chinarong)

Stopping the " we are the best Vocational School, and the others are rubbish " rhetoric from the Institutions Management and Instructors will certainly help to control these thugs.

All this is doing is breeding bad behaviour by young people that already have a very high opinion of themselves, and their achievements thus far in life due to their peers.
