Thailand seeks to attract more Bruneian tourists



BANGKOK: -- Thailand will be looking to top the number of Bruneian tourists for 2014 after experiencing a major increase in the previous year, the country’s ambassador to Brunei said yesterday.

In a phone interview, ApichartPhetcharatana said that according to figures from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the country recorded 14,000 Bruneian visitors in 2013. This is 40 per cent higher than 2012.

“The aim for 2014 is 16,000 Bruneian visitors. To achieve this figure, we are working closely with TAT to run more programmes that will hopefully attract more Bruneians to the country,” he told The Brunei Times.

He said most of the Bruneians have travelled enough to know that Thailand is famous for its beach resorts and shopping malls. MrApichart credited the increase to different factors such as high-level medical treatment, favourable exchange rates, variety of food and the fact the Thailand is near the Sultanate.

Apichart said Bruneians like to buy big name brands and are willing to spend more to follow the latest fashion trends. “Thailand’s malls don’t only carry global brand names but also local brands so that tourists have more options,” he said, adding that Thai-made products are of good quality.

Tourism is one of Thailand’s key sectors, accounting for about 10 per cent of its GDP. Thailand’s state planning agency reported yesterday a slump in the tourist industry has eased. In July, the number of tourists fell 10.9 per cent from a year ago, compared with June’s 24.4 per cent plunge.

I wonder if more Bruneians are travelling to get a break from their new Sharia law. There are probably some of them who aren't happy about it. It seems pretty harsh. Here are some of the highlights I found in one website.

One doesn't wish to sound knocking Thailand, Thailand needs tourists from all parts of the globe, why do they always select from countries that are off the horizon to everybody else, last month it was China, how about Holland or Greenland or Canada , who cares, Thailand has bigger fish to worry about than worrying about image profiling of where tourists come from.

Thailand fixes the currency rate against the Brunei ringgit, so it costs them more. The ringgit is pegged 1:1 against the Singapore dollar, but in Thailand you always get 3-4 baht less for the ringgit. I used to go to the bank in Brunei to change currency to SGD before travelling to Thailand. Other countries use the SGD rate for the Brunei ringgit, but not Thailand.

Sharia Law is a bit of a misnomer - it is not a legal code, more an extremely complex religious doctrine which requires interpretation. Various religious nut jobs, the most extreme, usually funded by the West call their laws Sharia - but are in fact interpretations.

Ancient Judaic Law, the foundation of Christian doctrine is very similar - whereby, the penalty for eating shell fish is death.

But owning slaves is fine.
