Thailand seeks to attract more Bruneian tourists

BANGKOK: -- Thailand will be looking to top the number of Bruneian tourists for 2014 after experiencing a major increase in the previous year, the country’s ambassador to Brunei said yesterday.

In a phone interview, ApichartPhetcharatana said that according to figures from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the country recorded 14,000 Bruneian visitors in 2013. This is 40 per cent higher than 2012.

“The aim for 2014 is 16,000 Bruneian visitors. To achieve this figure, we are working closely with TAT to run more programmes that will hopefully attract more Bruneians to the country,” he told The Brunei Times.

He said most of the Bruneians have travelled enough to know that Thailand is famous for its beach resorts and shopping malls. MrApichart credited the increase to different factors such as high-level medical treatment, favourable exchange rates, variety of food and the fact the Thailand is near the Sultanate.

Apichart said Bruneians like to buy big name brands and are willing to spend more to follow the latest fashion trends. “Thailand’s malls don’t only carry global brand names but also local brands so that tourists have more options,” he said, adding that Thai-made products are of good quality.

Tourism is one of Thailand’s key sectors, accounting for about 10 per cent of its GDP. Thailand’s state planning agency reported yesterday a slump in the tourist industry has eased. In July, the number of tourists fell 10.9 per cent from a year ago, compared with June’s 24.4 per cent plunge.

I wonder if more Bruneians are travelling to get a break from their new Sharia law. There are probably some of them who aren't happy about it. It seems pretty harsh. Here are some of the highlights I found in one website.

With regards to this, may be the Thai Authorities should advise the Bruneians not to go to police when they get drugged by Ladyboys.

Better than Liberians!

People from Brunei have a decent amount of dosh, and I'm sure many are looking for a break from the draconian Sharia law that they now find themselves under, which is very hypocritical seeing as the Sultan and Prince Jefri abused Sharia law for decades with their decadence.

Brunei? Why Brunei?

Even the whole country comes at once, it could hardly fill Chatuchak market.

Exactly, I remember a big scandal in the Philippines when Filipina models and actresses made a lot of money as ' guests ' of members of the royal family.

Did the Sultan of Brunei have anything to do with starting Sharia law there? If he did, perhaps he should be ashamed to ask his people to live with strict laws from the dark ages while he enjoys his 7000 or so luxury cars valued at around 20 billion dollars. The list I saw includes 604 Rolls Royce's; 574 Mercedes-Benz; 452 Ferrari's; 382 Bentley's...and on and on.

it's balanced out apparently as the people enjoy everything free, except choice of religion.

In addition to exisiting brand name hotels, Sultan is now in the process of trying to acquire Plaza Hotel & Dream Hotel in NYC, and London's Grosvenor House Hotel - strange world that permits this investment activity from such cruel rulers.

As ' strict ' Moslems they will, of course, turn these into temperance hotels with no alcohol and then no customers.

Even their ' brothers ' won't be guests as they travel to get away from Islam, go and on the piss and do other things that a young man like I has no knowledge of.

Was going exactly thru my mind.. as I read down to your post!! clap2.gif

No. Kaek. And the Thais dislike them as much as the Russians. Way to go Thailand laugh.png

Narathiwat and Pattani come to mind.......

One doesn't wish to sound knocking Thailand, Thailand needs tourists from all parts of the globe, why do they always select from countries that are off the horizon to everybody else, last month it was China, how about Holland or Greenland or Canada , who cares, Thailand has bigger fish to worry about than worrying about image profiling of where tourists come from.coffee1.gif

Thailand fixes the currency rate against the Brunei ringgit, so it costs them more. The ringgit is pegged 1:1 against the Singapore dollar, but in Thailand you always get 3-4 baht less for the ringgit. I used to go to the bank in Brunei to change currency to SGD before travelling to Thailand. Other countries use the SGD rate for the Brunei ringgit, but not Thailand.

Brunei today, Luxembourg and Lichtenstein tomorrow.

Since they can't get to paradise that doesn't exist, Thailand will have to do. Sad state of affairs.

If they could solve the decade old crime about the murdered people and stolen gem stones and finally bring it to a conclusion despite the huge loss of face to Thailand for revealing the truth, maybe the country and people of Brunei would like Thailand a little more and encourage people to come here for holidays...

Brunei, are you sure, wasn't this old 'unsolved mystery'(NOT) about Saudi Arabians? Or do you know about another hush-hush story of murder and theft perpetrated by/with/for RTP top-brass? Actually, now that I wrote the previous question,I guess there could be quite some, so, let's stick to Brunei citizens only...

Sharia Law is a bit of a misnomer - it is not a legal code, more an extremely complex religious doctrine which requires interpretation. Various religious nut jobs, the most extreme, usually funded by the West call their laws Sharia - but are in fact interpretations.

Ancient Judaic Law, the foundation of Christian doctrine is very similar - whereby, the penalty for eating shell fish is death.

But owning slaves is fine.

They might be disappointed to learn that Shisha is banned.

Could it be that TAT sees Brueneians as sources of lots of money? I think UKCanuk in post 17 alluded to this:

"Thailand fixes the currency rate against the Brunei ringgit, so it costs them more."
