BANGKOK: -- THE NATIONAL Legislative Assembly yesterday voted unanimously for junta chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha to be the 29th prime minister of Thailand. He was the sole candidate for the job. Prayuth was widely tipped to become the next prime minister after staging the coup in May.

Prior to the assembly meeting, the only questions that remained were whether he would win unanimous approval or whether there would be other candidates.

Of the 197 NLA members, 191 voted for Prayuth while NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai and assembly vice presidents Surachai Liengboonlertchai and Peerasak Porchit abstained. Three members were reportedly on sick leave.

Prayuth did not attend the meeting as he was not required to, and did not need to reveal his vision for the country.

Instead, he attended a ceremony commemorating the 64th anniversary at the 21st Infantry Regiment of the Queen's Guard in Chon Buri province.

An army of journalists arrived at Parliament early yesterday morning and there were a large number of security officers.

Before the meeting started, NLA members lined up for a group photo at 9am in a noticeably lively atmosphere, as members had got to know one other better through previous meetings.

Voting began at around 10 am, with Pornpetch detailing the voting procedures.

NLA member Tuang Antachai nominated Prayuth for the prime minister's post, and the military-dominated assembly rushed to raise their hands to approve the proposal.

Pornpetch had to remind them that they still had to indicate their support on the electronic voting system.

The voting process went smoothly as members seemed to have collectively made up their mind.

The assembly president said he expected to submit Prayuth's name as the new prime minister to His Majesty the King for royal endorsement later yesterday.

In another thread covering a story from The Nation says the general was handpicked by the NLA which is stretching things to say the least.

The NLA is handpicked, the general nominated himself and the toadies said ' best man for the job '.

On the word of command the NLA voted for him and i wonder what the figures were, did anyone abstain far less actually vote NO ?

I'm not saying he isn't doing a job or will not continue doing so but let's keep things right and in proper perspective.

Love to have seen that was it televised?

Same same like Kim of NK.tia

Would you be the person who stands aside and says you don't want to choose Prayuth?

I agree with your hypothesis.... Prayuth should have maintained his martial law and rule by the sword until a real democratic vote could be made. No one in their right mind would vote against him even if he is the best man for the job right now.

But now he can say that he was democratically voted for the same as Kim.

Personally i think he has been doing fine without this title as PM. He is straightening out this countries messes that the previous Gov left.

But the vote makes him look bad

Thailand has never had a true democracy and coups galore but that hasn't nor will it stop tourist from coming here. Enjoy paradise and complain when you are dead.

I now have a serious problem: I never visited Spain whilst Franco was the boss and Greece when the generals had the power.

It's a question of principles.

To quote Woody Allen from his film 'Bananas':

"This trial is a travesty. It's a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham."

And I wouldn't visit those places now nor try to stay there. And there are not too many other places to go that are not being strangled with austerity programs or battered by hurricanes and earthquakes. There is no heaven on earth just a precieved one. "Don't Worry Be Happy"

He said he would give the power back to the people by elections within 15 months. He said he didn't want to be prime minister and that he would retire in Sept. It was his plan all along but first he had to silence the critics with good deeds. It is not Democracy it is a Dictatorship no matter how much smoke he blows up The People's ass.

Opinions, opinions, all along.

Anyway,in a way it's amazing that people keep comparing the NLA with other governments and then complain it's not a democracy. Well, no one ever said it was or even was meant to be. It a time filler till the NRC / CDC have done their work and the general elections can take place. That's about 15 months from date of coup.
